I've heard horror stories going from Bangkok to Siem Reap, but is the reverse safe?

I've heard it takes between 7 and 10 hours for a direct bus. Is this a safe route? Thanks Reply to this

Hey there,

this route is very popular and very safe, many people travel on direct coaches, like many borders in S.E.A you get dropped at the border, you stamp out and in, then the coach picks you up from the other side. Crossed this border ouselves, though independently and not on this route, so not sure about times but would guess a little longer than 10 hours. If you do it yourselves Aranya Prathet on the Thai side is a big enough town and you'll easily pick up a bus to Bangkok, or you could head a short distance North and catch a train, cant remember from where though!

Hi, just wanted to update my experience. Paid 9 dollars for the bus, but I bought it off a stand on the street and probably would have cost more if from a hotel. Got to the border no problem, but as we got off the bus they took our tickets and put a colored sticker on our shirts. Looking back I should have kept half the ticket to be safe. Getting stamped took about an hour, but for whatever reason a minibus was there to pick us up and not everyone could fit. We thought this was weird but another came in twenty minutes and took us to a fancy restaurant. They told us the bus was coming in half an hour. The food wasn't very good and cost three times what it should have and the kitchen messed up many people's meals. While this was going on I couldn't help but notice a large bus parked in the back lot. After they finally got everyone's food served (an hour and a half later) the bus in the back lot pulled up at the exact moment the last person paid. Hmmm. We were deathly afraid they would take us to a shady hostel way out of Bangkok because they seemed to be taking the scenic route, but they dropped us off on Khoa San Road about twelve hours after the trip began, a mere five hours late. So when the guy told me the trip takes seven hours what he meant was your ass is in the bus seat for seven hours, but he didn't count getting stamped or eating. Reply to this

Yup the road these days is much improved but if there is a leg in South East Asia that you should fly that would be it. They allways lie on the time it takes and it is allways filled with scams and rip offs.

I have done the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Trat to Bangkok and that is pretty enjoyable now that the road is right.

Air Asia allways has good deals Phnom Penh Bangkok if you book in advance. Phnom Penh to Siem Reap 5+ hours, good roads and no major hassles. Catch the bus near street 100 on the river, Mekong Express is the best you pay 2 bucks more but it is worth it.
