There are many nice places in between. It all depends on what you like to do. some cities around Shanghai have lot's to offer. Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shaoxing and the so called water towns (though at least Zhouzhuang is extremely touristy). Huangshan mountain is another possibility but it may be too cold. Another area which is really nice and off the tourist map is the Hunan province. Fantastic spicy food. Changsha is a nice city with friendly inhabitants, a very good musuem and some parks. there are other areas in Hunan that are more difficult to get to and I don't know if it is the right season but Zhangjiajie Forest Park is one of the most beautiful places I have to and Phoenix Town (Fenghuang) is very pretty and the surroundings stunning. Personally I didn't like Guilin so much but I had first visited Hunan which had such a different flavour, in the sense that very few Westerners go there while in Guilin and Yangshuo you are just a wallet, although the scenery is fantastic (in my opinion not as good as Zhangjiajie though). You may also be able to do a cruise on the Yangtse river which is an experience not ot be missed. Guangzhou is fine for a day or two. Shenzhen, though I haven't been, doesn't seem to have much to offer. Reply to this

I agree with the others too. There's plenty of little cities in between that you can travel to quite easily. I spent 3 days up in Suzhou and Hangzhou recently and they were absolutely beautiful places.

My friend showed me a website with a really good guide that she used when she went there last year. It definitely helped me get around the area and narrow down the places i wanted to go and see - http://www.urbanatomy.com/index.php/city-guides-/shanghai-2009/2076-the-yangzi-delta

Hope it helps if you do decide to travel there! Reply to this
