How much money does it cost???

Haven't even started route planning, but need a rough idea of how much the whole trip will cost.

I'm planning to start traveling early next year, Europe, most of Asia, South America and Africa.
I really need advice on costs, basically I have been saving all through uni but I don't want to run out of money and have to come home 😞 Can any experienced travelers give me a rough amount that they spent and briefly where they visited and how far their budget stretched. I would rather work and save up a few months extra if it means I can stay out of the UK for as long as possible, I'm ready to explore the world!
Thanks x

There is a book called First time Around the World, as well as separate versions: First Time Asia and First Time South and Central America. They note general costs for each country. They are by Rough Guide. I would suggest you pick up a copy as it will address some of these questions.

Your budget will depend on what countries you visit and how long you spend in each place. Europe is significantly more expensive than Asia for example. It will also depend on how much money you spend on partying. There are a lot of countries in the continents you list above. Travelling between many different countries tends to be more expensive than spending longer in a smaller number of countries.

How long do you want to travel for in total? Flights will be a big chunk of your budget. Are you planning on buying a round the world ticket or separate flights?

Briefly, the first time we went backpacking, 3 years ago, we (a couple) spent £3,000 in 3 months travelling around Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia (including Borneo) and Singapore (for Christmas and New Year). Singapore was the most expensive country. Followed by Malaysia. Laos was the cheapest.

Hope this helps.

You spent 3000£ together in that 3 months? I'm travelling to those countries but am doing one way via the trans siberian. I've saved 3000£ but am going for 6 months! starting to get a bit worried.

£3000 between both of us. Singapore is more expensive than the other countries, and as we spent Christmas and New Year there - 10 days in total, it was a bit pricey. You can, of course, spend less than that, as we do like to enjoy a Chang beer or two.

I'm assuming that your £3,000 is just for the 6 months in SE Asia, and not for the Trans Siberian as well.....

Hi there Keechidee.

Im trying to stay out of the uk for as long as possiable too.So for that reason I thought Europ could wait for a later dat, especially with the Euro matching the sterling at the moment.

So. . .

I headed out to Thailand a few weeks ago and I have found that Im getting by with less than 1000bht a day.(£20ish)
Although I am travelling alone so I am watching the funds probably more so than if I was travelling with someone else.

What I have found on my trip upto now is. . .

Im not out looking for the best accomodation, nor the worst!

Haggle at the appropriate time to get things for the right price. taxis and tuk tuk especially

Overnight coaches or "V.I.P" coaches as they are advertised are a cheap way to get around S,E,A
(example I got one from Bangkok to Koh Samui for 500bht which included the boat crossing)
Some people may even say thats not that cheap, some people I spoke to paid 400bht

Im now on a beach front in my little bungalow on the north shore of Koh Samui paying 350bht a night (£6)

Happy days. . . .although it is throwing a monsoon every few days between the sunny spells :-)

My costs before set off. . .

Flight out from uk one way. . .£366 (travelsupermarket)
Insurance £180 (insure and go,silver bundle)
Anti Malaria pils £200 (for 90)
Catagory "O" visa £110 (for Thailand)
