Europe Train Travel ???

Some train/railpass-related questions about my upcoming trip.
17 years ago, June 28th 2006 No: 1 Msg: #6414
Though I've been to Europe a few times, my August trip will be the first where we'll be moving around a decent amount by train. Looks like paris - lausanne/montreux - venice.

i've done lots of research on passes and seem to think the 3 country pass makes the most sense but still can't find anyone to ask detailed questions about it.

-we want first class...is there any reason to think we wouldn't get it?
-do we need reservations on top of having the pass?
-where should i purchase? best price seems to be raileurope.com (325)...but am i missing anything?
-anything else obvious that i'm missing that would be useful.

many thanks for any help!! Reply to this

Well I will try to answer a few of the questions since my girlfriend and I are currently doing the rail thing.
First one, I would say that it is all depending upon you. Second, for almost all the trains you do need a reservation. The most expensive ones are for Eurostar and 15 Euro per person. Third, you need to purchase your rail pass in your home country. We got ours through a company called Travel Cuts, a travel agency for students. Last, the only good info that I can think of right now is that it is best to reserve for your next trip when you arrive in the city that you will be departing from. Reply to this

First class isn't really necessary... We have found 2nd class for the most part to be just as good as first, though we are students and are into saving the money. We have talked to people that have done both, and they say go 2nd class and spend the extra money on souvenirs and yummy dinners! Reply to this
