Need help with planning for a 10 day trip
14 years ago, October 21st 2009 No: 1 Msg: #90187
Hey there,

I'm planning on going to Ecuador for a 10 day high school science trip and I've been watching many of your videos to find out what gear might work the best for me. I was hoping you would possibly give me some advise on what type of equipment to bring with me or what might work better then something else (we'll be going in the dry season).

I'll be "roughing" it for two days out on a sand bar with a small-ish group of people ( 12-14 ), I will also be doing lots of hiking. The rest of the time will be divided into being on motorized canoes, exploring the cities we'll be in, and of course in the lodge.

Here is what I've come up with so far gear wise;
Knife - I've been debating on the Becker BK9 or the Becker BK7, I'm leaning toward to BK9 but I'm not 100% sure...
Boots - Merrel Chameleon Ventilator Mid GORE-TEX (I probably won't buying from this link because I live in Canada, this is just to give you an idea of the shoe)

Pants - I was recommended to get some shorts and track-like pants?
Shirts - Just some short and long sleeved shirts?
Jacket - Probably just a light track-like jacket?
Bag - I'm not sure exactly what to get here... I'd really like to have one with bungee strap on the bottom for a sleeping bag to be put into and I'd like to have a bag with a hydration baggy in it, I figure it is just one less this that I'll need to open my bag for. I was looking at this bag but I'm not sure if its a good deal or not because its in pounds/euros. http://www.beargryllsstore.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_14051_-1_27266_74075_11052_26265 Any recommendations?
Sleeping Bag - I've got no clue here.. any ideas?
Gloves - Just some good quality leather gloves?

I'm not sure if I'll need to pack a tent with me or not which will help me decide on how big of a bag I will need obviously, I will ask the teacher and get back to you on that.

I'm not sure if you would find this helpful to know or not when thinking of gear that might be of use to me but I think it might. I'm 230lbs and roughly 5'10 - 5'11 possibly 6' , I'm in fairly good shape, not the best I could be in but I feel as though I would be fully capable of carrying a heavy bag on hikes if need be.

Thank you for taking the time to read this even if you don't end up answering,
Take care,
