I am very soon booking my climb date for next year for Kilimanjaro, i suspect it will be August/September 2010. I am very keen to climb with people who are good fun and all get on with one another. I could well be going on my own and as such will just join an existing date/group, but am really worried that the group will be very fragmented and NO fun, this would just ruin my trip. I am under NO illusion that i too at times will be knackered, cold and wet but i would love to have people around me who do their best to remain positive and have good fun.
Once i log my date with 'Team Kilimanjaro' then i can let you know if you are serious about the climb, then you can just pay your small deposit and join my group. My girlfriend and her brother are confirming this week with me about whether they are coming or not so we may have 3 climbers booked with space for a few more.

Any thoughts or even advice from people WHO HAVE DONE IT!! are more than welcome!

35 year old male from England, great sense of humor and up for a challenge of MY lifetime!!

hey jt. i climbed kili in 2005; its a great experience, one you and your fellow travellers wont forget.

the first thing that comes to mind when reading your post is your date - not sure but its worth reading up on this in more detail. i did the climb in january, which i was told was the ideal season for it. aug/sept might just be the rainy season.

a few of other things to bear in mind - yes you are in africa but, on the mountain, it gets really really cold, especially when doing the final push for the summit, so don;t scrimp on the clothing, get warm fleeces, thermal underwear, socks, gloves should all be of the best quality. that goes for your boots as well and also your daysack, make sure that is a good one as you could be wearing it for anything upto 11 hrs a day. you'll also need wet weather clothing.

make sure you select the most appropriate route, not the quickest route but one which will allow you to acclimatise appropriately. and don't ignore altitude sickness or AMS. choose you tour company well and get them to walk through the options and make sure you understand what experience your guide will have and how many porters will be with you. don;t go for the cheapest, they will push you hard and quicker and scrimp on the food and provisions.

hope this info helps, there's plenty of info on the web about things such as kit lists, routes etc.. also if you have the time take the opportunity to explore some more of northern tanzania; ngorogoro crater is a fantastic 2-3 day safari and a good way to wind down from the climb before heading back to the airport, also check out arusha or moshi of you have the time.

if you have any specific questions, let me know.

Thank you very much for your effort and time in writing. I have done a lot of reading/research as i feel this is a) part of all the excitement and b) V important to ensure i am 100% clear on what to expect/to take etc etc.
I will be climbing with 'team Kilimanjaro' they seem to be pretty good with all correspondence back and forth. Also not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive....approx $2000 exc flights.

Thank you again for your comments

Jaytee, I have some friends from the US coming for a visit and a climb (I am an American who has been living in Moshi) within that time frame. I will contact them (they are trekking in Nepal currently) and see if they would like to join in with you. I am pretty sure that they have a different company in mind though (since I was the one who recommended a different company to them). I will let you know once I get in contact with them. How dedicated are you with using team Kilimanjaro? I have never heard of them, but they may contract out to another company in Moshi or Arusha. I will ask around town and find out more. Don't know if you were still looking to go in September 2010, but I'm in the midst of planning a trip up Kilimanjaro in the fall. Maybe with one other person.

Planning a safari and then a visit to Victoria Falls.

Send me a note if you would like to share costs. Reply to this
