What vaccines do I need
17 years ago, June 22nd 2006 No: 1 Msg: #6289
I am travelling to Thailand in a couple of months for two months. I will be mainly in Thailand but plan to go to Laos for a couple of days and Hong Kong for a couple also. Can someone who has travelled here please tell me what vaccines you got before you travelled. Do I need the Hepatitis B vaccine or would I be ok without it ? Reply to this

Best to get in touch with your local travel clinic and see what they recommend. Not only do the recommendations change periodically but it also depends where you currently live, not only where you are going, as to what vaccines are recommended.

I would also recommend checking out the Centre for Disease Control website (google up that plus travel advisory). If you live in Canada, you can actually get most of the vaccines through your doctor and you don't have to go to a local travel clinic (as they charge you a travel consultation fee and slightly higher prices for vaccines). Here though, travel consultations arn't technically covered under medicare so if you have a family doctor that really likes you, try to go for a regular check up and then slip in the travel vaccine requests/questions. I did the travel clinic consultation the first time I went overseas travelling but I really don't see the point in going again when you know what vaccine you need as I think they charge you for another consultation.

I would recommend specifically asking your doctor for an antibiotic called Ciprofloxin as its a fabulous thing to have on hand if you get serious travellers sickness (it sure beats going to the local hospital), plus carry quick-dissolve Immodium (not the regular kind) and oral rehydration salts. I carry these essentials anytime I travel to countries with dodgy water and sanitation. Reply to this
