I'm planning on going to China next June for about 6 weeks.

Which towns/cities should I visit?

Where should I start?

Where do I absolutely have to go?

Any suggested routes?

Thanks in advance Reply to this

I did the Beijing - Xian - Shanghai bit last May. Then a few side trips while based in Shanghai. Zhouzhang, suzhou and nanjing are only a couple of hours away.

If I were to go back, I would go to Guilin, and perhaps even Tibet. Reply to this

Spent a total of only 2 weeks in 3 cities , not long enough. My friend wanted to go to Datong also, while I wanted to see Guilin and Tibet. Maybe next trip. Reply to this

I personally would recommend against Shanghai. From a tourist POV there's really nothing there. Depending on what you wanna do. Xi'an, Beijing are the most ideal, I would also hit up Pingyao in Shanxi province, it's a great historically preserved city that is very popular.

Chengdu is also a great city to hit up with the Panda Reserve, Leshan Dafo (Giant Buddha), and Emeishan in the vicinity you can easily spend a week there.

Guilin and Yangshuo are also must see cities although I think a few days there is good enough.

On the west Suzhou and Hangzhou would be good to see too.

My suggested route would be Beijing > Pingyao > Xi'an > Chengdu > Guilin/Yangshuo at least. China has so much to do that you can find something cool anywhere you go. But I think Beijing/Xi'an/Guilin/Chengdu are my must see cities. Reply to this

I loved the old town, in Shanghai. I also loved the jazz band which played at the Peace Hotel every evening. Dont know if they still play though. The band members were getting pretty old, when I was there 10 years ago. Reply to this

Just a couple of months ago I did Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin and Shanghai. Spent 3 nights in Beijing and 2 nights each in other locations. Had a cab and translator in all cities and took flights between cities. I have blogs on all the 5 locations. Hope that helps. Every location had its own chram. Reply to this

Hi Bubsy63,

Have you been to hong kong before, if didnt, i personally suggest you should start you trip from hong kong first for you can enjoy anything in hong kong range from food, entertainment, sightseeing, shopping......

I suggest a different route to you if you take my advice. hong kong - - - shenzhen - - - goungzhou - - - Yulin - - - Shanghai - - -Beijing - - - Nanjing.

i especially suggest shenzhen is a good city to visit. you can find some china traditional stuffs with very low price. There is a shopping city called China South City in SZ. Products there are quite low price and good quality.

goungzhou (good food), Yulin (good scenary), shanghai, beijing and nanjing (good historial buildings, traditional culture and of course the "great wall")

hope you will have a memorable trip in CHINA!

Got back last month from a 'Wendy Wu' 28 day tour of China. Sensational. Check out their brochure for the places we visited. I'm glad I did an organised tour because of the great crowd we met & travelled with, hassel free and tummy-bug free too. Doubt I would eat at a lot of the places we saw. So important to stay healthy when travelling.
Beijing, Yangtze river (4 days), Li river, Guilin & Dali (deep South) are musts. Dali will cleanse the lungs of city smog and the old city (& people) was the most beautiful at night with lantern lit mountain streams running through the streets. In Shanghai, don't miss the op to ride their Mag-Lev train. Weather was great in Oct, BUT it is much colder now. I think we just made it out on the day the first snow fell in Beijing. Reply to this
