When do you feel like your trip has begun?

And when does it end?

When do you feel like you are off on your trip? When does it feel like it has begun? When you leave home? When you get off the plane / train / boat / bus at your first destination? And what about the end of the trip? When you get back on that plane / train / boat / bus? Or when you make it back through the front door at home?

For me, my trip feels like it has begun the minute I leave home, be it on the way to the airport, ferry port or even leaving in the kombi for a camping trip. The other half reckons its when he leaves work for the last time, even if its a week before we leave home. I dont care if we are going to be hours early for the plane, I still want to leave home, walk out the door with my pack, and be on my way! At least I feel that I am going somewhere.

Coming home I am not so sure. Sometimes its leaving the last hostel / couch surf to head to the airport, sometimes its after we have checked in and are watching the departures board, looking for our flight to Auckland, sometimes its not even till we get home and get the first load of laundry in the machine. A couple of times I've even felt the trip is over a few days before we leave to come home. That has got to be the most depressing!

So, what about everyone else? Reply to this

hmm well for me its quiet different.
I am 18 and i travel alone so i am constantly nervous about the obsticles i will be facing. But when the thought of jungle walking and waterfall hunting relaxes me! Relaxes me so much that i would be smiling for myself.
When i reach my destination its another story. College and my "society" life is the least worry! Nothing matters now, nothing at all because you have Escaped.
When on my return journey back home, I would wish if i could rewind everything back despite the obstacles i faced. Because those obstacles was a story of the past that happend loooong time ago 😊 Reply to this

Hello Karen and Colin 😊

I suppose there is more than one beginning of the trip.

When I get the inspiration for a new destination: That is a beginning of searching for more information and opinions.
When I buy the plane or train ticket: That is a definate beginning, because now I know I am going for sure.
On the way to the airport or train station: Another definate beginning, because I am leaving my house, my usual lifestyle etc behind for a while.
Arriving in the destination: The best of the beginnings and the reason for all the other beginnings at last.
Arriving home again: The beginning of storing more in my travel memories. Also, the beginning or whatever new things I have discovered while travelling being added to my life.

I forgot to say when it ends. It ends when I have slept off the jet lag and answered all emails, phone calls, and snail mail that arrived while I was away. Then I start doing again what I usually do every day and every week while fantasisizing about and planning where I will travel to next. Reply to this

I love all your beginnings Mel. Going by them, our next trip has already begun - what an awesome thought! We have the inspiration for our next destination. (Well, maybe the next few destinations 😱) If only it was really beginning and we were leaving home... Reply to this

By beginning definition number 2, my trips to S. America in November have begun and my trip to the mountains on Saturday too.

By definition number 1, my trip to Syria and the one to Thailand, Combodia and Malaysia of next year have begun. Reply to this

My trip only ends when I have unpacked and put away my backpack :-( In the past I have visited friends in England before actually going home after a big trip, so therefore I think I'm still travelling!

Beginning a trip..hmm I think it must be when I leave home, i.e. catching the bus to the airport. Planning the trip is certainly exciting but it's not until I'm on my way do I feel like it's all begun. Reply to this

I must have been on a trip for the 5 months then with all the fantasizing and planning I've been doing! At work when it's quiet I am cheekily on the net researching and planning away and getting all excitable hehe, I love it, the excitement brewing and then overspilling when it's the morning of the big adventure!! planning a trip is half the fun! still say mine starts when I leave home with my pack. Agree with Hollie though, my trip usually ends when I get home, the excitement maybe ends a bit before that though! Reply to this

I must say for me that it feels like the trip has begun when i am sitting in the airport waiting for the first flight, I live in Tasmania so it is always a first flight 😊

The planning for me is exciting of course and I love it even after a few years of backpacking! Just looking through the internet for ideas of where to go, what to see gets me excited!

But when I am looking for that cheap flight, find one, trying to book it before it goes. Gives me that feeling every time!

As for coming home, it does happen but in my mind I have already thought of a new place to go to so the excitment begins again 😊

For me, it is the moment I pick up a cab going to the airport. All the excitement and thrills and so many emotions to see a familiar or an unfamiliar place. That's what I felt when I had my . It made my vacation complete because of the nice experiences I had there including the people I met.

For me, it used to be when I first glimpsed a famous landmark - Eiffel Tower, Pyramids or the like.

However, nowadays, my trip begins the moment the plane leaves the runway at my home airport. The end is when I have completed my last blog of that particular journey - which is always after I have arrived home.

My trip begins the moment I leave home and ends the last day of my trip when I am returning home.

I feel like it's a normal day for me to travel. There's no beginning and ending when I'm traveling. I'm in the center of excitement just because I love to travel. Reply to this

Generally when I get to a new place only after one good night sleep and a bit of settling down I realize that I am away from home and that my trip has began! Reply to this

My trips begins the day before the trip actually begins. it starts with the preparation and of course the excitement that comes with it that makes sleeping a little bit harder... once I have made a list of all the things that I may need for the trip, I would then buy it and then pack the luggages. would double check it of course and then will have to check the things that I will leave behind... what a way to start a trip eh..
