Overpriced travel treats.

What have you payed over the odds for, to have a special experience. Visit to Antarctica? To outerspace? Galapagos? Someplace else or something else?

Post a link to your blog, your photos or tell your story about your overpriced treat here.

I consider it an expensive treat when I do any travel.

Probably the most overpriced thing I did is take the mountain train for 45 Euros up one of the peaks of the Alps here in Bavaria. I am going there again in a couple of weeks and will take the cabelcar up this time, which is also quite expensive at 40 Euros, considering I could take a train all the way from Munich to Berlin for 29 Euros. I suppose travelling to Kyrgyzstan and Iran could be considered expensive treats too. Not so many tourists go to those places, so the flights cost more than flights to other places of the same distance away. Reply to this

Other things on offer near where I live in Munich that are expensive are rides in antique planes, helicopter rides, hot air balloon rides. I have not yet done these things. They cost a bit more than I want to spend on them, right now. Reply to this

I took a helicopter from Milford sound back to Queenstown earlier this year, which included a stop on top of a glacier along the way . It was very expensive (about $700 if I remember correctly) but thankfully, my son weighed 1 lb under the weight limit to sit on my knee, so they let him on for free! I couldn't have done it if I had to pay for him as well.

It was amazing, the weather that day was wonderful and the sky was crystal clear. Standing on top of the glacier was amazing, to be surrounded by breathtaing views of mountains was incredible. It was worth every penny, I will never forget it. It was the first time either me or my little boy had been in a helicopter as well.

Spending the night sleeping on the great wall of China was pretty pricey too, but again, it was out of this world, such a marvelous experience.

I hope the links to the blogs work not done it before - I think the pics from the heicopter ride are on the last pic page for the NZ one.

On our RTW my wife and I vowed to budget hard so we could do one off things, that were a bit expensive if we wanted to without feeling guilty, or ending the trip early as we'd run out of funds...

We spent 5 weeks in New zealand on the year long trip and as it's full of one off experiences we pretty much did everything we could, tearing our budget apart..... It was one long 5 week treat! 😉

Not sure I'd count any of these things as overpriced but when you're on a budget, they all seem so expensive...

White water rafting/black water rafting
White water sledging
Jet boating
Prawn fishing
Whale Watching
Kayaking Abel Tasman
Sky-diving Abel Tasman
Blue Penguin watching (?)
Canyon Swinging Twice (Queenstown)
Fly by Wire (Queenstown)
Nevis Bungee (Twice)
Snowboarding (Queenstown)
Kayak Milford Sound
Franz Josef Glacier Walk

Plus some other stuff I've probably forgotten.... Not to mention all the eating/drinking that we got up to as we met up with a friend we'd not seen in a while who was with us the whole time.

We spent £111 a day there, and boy did that hurt adding it up, Still... It ranks as some of the best weeks of my life and I wouldn't change a thing...

Last time I was in India, I met a backpacker on a rock bottom budget. He got sick after 4 months in India and had to go home sooner than he expected, because of it. He decided to blow the rest of his cash on fancy hotels and restaurants. Reply to this

Just came from Africa and went on a balloon safari over Masai Mara - $425 hurt the budget considering we were only in the air about an hour but was definitely worth it! Reply to this

Yeah, those balloon rides are very expensive. Do you ever wonder why we want to pay so much for more primitive transport and take the wonders modern transport for granted. 😉

Speaking of efficient, has anyone ever flown on Concorde? But, maybe Concorde is no longer the fastest way to cross the Atlantic? Is there now something faster and probably more expensive?

My father worked for BA in the 80's and managed to score concord tickets for a huge discount once. He hated it, said it was the most cramped, noisy uncomfortable flight of his life and he couldn't understand why people paid so much to shave a few hours off a London to NY flight!

I would love to cross the atlantic on an ocean liner. I looked at the QE2 website, but I don't have posh enough clothes, so I would have to be down in steerage 😉 Reply to this

Safari in Tanzania. No matter how hard we looked there were no cheap options! To top it off we couldn't pay by card and all the banks were shut. We had to get a cash advance from a hotel which charged 20%!c(MISSING)ommission as well!

Having done safaris before I was pretty p'd off but as my girlfriend hadn't done one before i conceded - the next best thing was catching her asleep in the 4x4 whilst I was searching for animals that i'd seen before!!!

It was a great few days but I could think of better ways to part with such large amounts of cash!

Well, its not that I couldn't afford my overpriced travel treat but for the reasons on why I have done so, I'd say it is completely overpriced. I went on a cruise for 10 days to Caribbean and other tropical places some summers ago paying a few thousands of dollars. I went alone. I got the cruise ticket from a friend whom I was drinking rhum with the night before the cruise and I took it because I was in a middle of a family feud. got pressured and went on the trip without any bags. had to buy all of my stuffs on board..what a way to waste money just to escape..
