First time to Phuket

I fly into Phuket on 21 September. I have until 1 October and plan to visit Bangkok for a few days. What should I do? Who can I meet?

Hello everyone. I am Matt, Aussie, 31, male, proud father of 6 yr old twin boys. I am travelling to Phuket for the first time, fly in 21 September, fly home 1 October - short holiday I know!! I am travelling alone. I have done a fair bit of reading, but am not sure what to do while I am over there. I would be ever grateful for advice from experienced travellers.

I have several aims for my holiday: relax in paradise, eat and drink far too much and pamper myself with cheap thai massage etc; experience the world-renound Thai nightlife (including the adult version); and indulge in a fair bit of shopping (including made-to-measure suits and shirts).

I also plan on a few tours/exploring. From what I read a day trip out to Koh Phi Phi is the go; elephant rides; what else? I have read to stay away from the jet skis, that the operators are scammers. I am not a diver, but I would like to give it a try.

Can anyone provide some sage advice?

I am going to book a return flight into Bangkok, arriving Saturday 26 September, back to Phuket on 29 September. I am keen to experience the Bangkok nightlife and do a bit of shopping. I have been to Bangkok before (when I was with my ex-partner), so I have seen most of the tourist sites...although I did not get to the floating markets, which I will this time. I have done the entire legth of the Skyrail (although I hear it goes to the new airport now? When I went last time, I flew into Don Muang airport and the skyrail didn't go anywhere near it) and shopped like crazy at MBK and other centres around Siam Square.

What are some really cool things to do in Bangkok? I am travelling by myself...where can I catch up with other Aussies/Poms/ex-pats to chat/party with and experience Bangkok nightlife? I read good things about Patpong (adult nightlife) and Khao San Road (backpackers and gateway to rest of Thailand)...

Please indulge me with your expert commentary and tips....

Cheers

Matt

Hello Matt 😊

In my opinion the way to avoid getting scammed is to have a good idea about what things cost. Ask a number of other travellers you meet what they payed, so you can make a good guess about whether you are being over charged or not. Also, do as much as you can independently, to avoid tour scams. Get a copy of the Lonely Planet guide for Thailand to help you. Make sure that all taxis switch on the meter.

I think Jim Thompsons House in Bangkok is worth a visit. And be sure to eat at the restaurant in the Gardens. I will be going there again, next time I am in Bangkok. It is so beautiful and peaceful there.
