I'm not a hundred percent sure if it is or not but I've been to Ecuador every year for the last three years and it's always been 'being repaired' or 'stopped for safety reasons'. The one time it was running they had seriously shortened the trip so it was literally just a small stip of track outside Alausi. Either way they have now banned tourists from riding on the roof. I'm pretty sure it's still officially running but it's very hit or miss if it's working on a particular day. Reply to this

thanks for the info, I will be passing through Riobamba either on my way to Banos, or on my way back to Quito so will just call the train depot the day before and as Dorothy Day would say, "Que sera, sera"
