Have done a couple of homestays in Thailand, one at Ampawa and one at Sena, not far from Ayuttiah. Can recommend both of them but how you go about booking them I haven't a clue.A Thai friend booked the one at Ampawa and my wife's son booked the one at Sena for us.The problem is that no one at the homestay places spoke English. At Ampawa you could probably just turn up as there are quite a few situated along the canal. You'd have no problem finding one during the week but the weekends are very different as the place is very popular with Thais getting away for a break. The one at Sena is pretty difficult to find. You may be better off to try and find one when you arrive in Thailand .A travel agent would be able to help.Hope this helps. Maybe you like to visit this one instead: Amarald Home-Stay ! From Kuala Lumpur you can take airasia to Manado! It is off the beaten track! Not the countries you wanted to know but in easy reach nonetheless! And amazing!

How about trying Couch Surfing or Hospitality Club, they have members in the countries you mention and it can be a lot of fun.

Hi All

Thanks for the advice!

Think it would be best to leave it until we get out there and check with travel agents.

Hello!

I like your travelling style - definitely one of the best ways to really get to know Asia. Here are 2 ideas that might come in handy for you - one in Thailand and one in Malaysia.

In Thailand, you could try a homestay in Kopet , about 4.5 hours from Bangkok in really rural Thailand and near the Phimai ruins. One of the owners is English (the only non-Thai in the community though) and will show you pretty much everything there is to see in the area.

In Peninsular Malaysia, you can try a homestay in the small town of Teluk Ketapang, not far from Kuala Terengganu.

Both are brilliant, and definitely something very different.

Whatever you decide to do - I hope you have a great trip!
