SLR Camera safe?

Seasoned traveler heading to Central America, but want to bring my SLR this time. Should I do it?
14 years ago, August 13th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #83005
I am going to most of the central american countries for 3 months. I usually travel with a point and shoot camera that fits in my pocket and doesnt stand out. I now have an SLR that i want to take with me that fits in my backback, but not my pocket. Has anyone taken an SLR with them and did you experience any problems? For what its worth I dont stand out as a tourist minus the backpack. Dark hair, semi dark skin, and I speak spanish pretty well. Thanks for any feedback you can provide!
