When is the best time of the year to go there?
14 years ago, August 6th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #82299

Hi Mazen...I too am planning on travelling in Syria next year on my own. Would April be a good time weather wise? I'm also planning to see Egypt, Jordan and Turkey. Reply to this

I was in Syria during the last part of March last year and it is a great time to visit - the desert areas not too hot and the mountain areas not too cold. Reply to this

I travelled through Syria in 2006 in June/July and it was hot, but it was tolerable as long as I was wearing loose light clothing and carried a water bottle at all times. It is extremely windy there, so I suggest wearing a hat to keep your hair from getting sticky with sand particles.

I also travelled through Jordan in the winter of 2008 (January) and it was very nice. No rain, lots of sunshine, but it was in the high 60's most of the time. Nights spent in the desert were cold, so you have to pack layers of shirts and a warm jacket.

All in all, I the best time to travel in these countries from what I've read is late spring and early fall, but I did not have any complaints about July in Syria or January in Jordan. Happy travels! Reply to this

Thanks Elizabeth...were you a solo traveller? I'm thinking I may join a short tour for Egypt then perhaps travel Jordan, Syria and Turkey on my own...what do you think? Reply to this

I travelled with a group, but I have known several people who travelled solo and there were no problems. It is very easy to get a driver if you want to visit one of the highlights of the country, and there are busses available to go anywhere. Drivers will also wait for you if you ask for your return trip. Travel alone in the middle east is fine as long as you don't draw attention to yourself with outlandish clothing or disrespect their culture, so you should have a great trip. The people there are very welcoming and friendly. Reply to this

Hi Mazen and Elizabeth

Thankyou both for your advice....I'm feeling quite confident about travelling solo to the Middle East now. I have longed to visit this part of the world!

Mazen, could you recommend hotels in Syria? I don't need 5 star, just something reasonable. Like most travellers I'm looking to conserve expenses. And would the hotels be able to help with drivers/guides or bus
connections? Reply to this

Well there is many hotels 4 stars with resonable prices also 3 stars hotel is good
some old hotels ( boutique hotel) in old area rated as 2 stars hotel like Ghazal, alharmoun, and alharmeen hotel, they are clean and good and they are in the city centre.
hotels in general cannot make arrangments for guids and drivers, you should contact tour operators to do it

Some budget places do organise tours for travellers - I stayed at a budget place in Hama, and organised two different day tours with them. If you look through a guidebook or on the hotel's website (if they have them) it will usually state if they can organise tours.

Generally when travelling, if you stay in higher-end hotels, those that can organise tours will charge a far more expensive rate than if you organised it yourself. However, for the cheaper end of the market the price of using the hotel based tour services as opposed to your own tour is a lot closer, and the advantages are greater in this case - especially since they are able to match you up with others staying in the same place to share the costs.
