I\'ve had this idea for a while now, cross the pacific by land. My idea is to travel through Papua New Guinea, Soloman Islands, Vanatu, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, Polynesia, Easter Island, Chile. Has anyone been in the area? I\'m just looking for any input. Practicalities of any of these countries, other countries in the area, places not to be missed, what kind of budget to expect, and mostly if there are any ferry boats that connect these islands. I would rather not do the whole thing by freighter ship. Any input will be greatly appreciated. xx Reply to this

Well, I have been posting blogs on my adventures through many S. Pacific island nations, feel free to take a look at my blogs. I've gotten Solomons, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia and I'm on my way to Marshalls and Kiribati. Your most expensive part would be airfare if you go that route. There are some ferry boats but while I was out here one of them went down, killing over 60 people. I don't recommend the locally run ferries due to lack of maintenance.

Samoa was fantastic, with very friendly locals... I recommend Sava'i. If you're a diver, Tonga was my fave, both for sites and whale watching. NewCal is expensive, too westernized for my tastes... though there are some secluded areas. I don't recommend Guadalcanal unless you're a history buff, but Malaita was beautiful and culturally diverse.

no ferries connecting any of them I'm afraid although Papua New Guinea to Solomon Islands is possible by island hopping and using small local boats. Other than that there are only two inter-country passenger services in the Pacific: Vanuatu to New Caledonia and Samoa to Tokelau. In some countries you might be able to hitch a lift on a yacht or work as crew and get to another country like that.

Somewhere I'd really say shouldnt be missed in the Pacific is Yap state of the Federated States of Micronesia. Reply to this
