The solar eclipse that will take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 will be a total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.080 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam. A partial eclipse will be seen from the much broader path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of South East Asia and north-eastern Oceania.

Looks like it's going to hit here at about 6am.

So I'll have to set my alarm to see it.

I missed the partial eclipse here - because of cloud.

Saw it in Buhtan and China on the telly - not quite the same 😊 - I've seen one before - 1999? in the UK - interesting experience that puts our little planet in context.

I saw that one too. I was at work in Dublin. We all abandoned the customers and went outside, but I think they understood. 😊

So, Kris and Kate did you see it this morning? Reply to this

Sleep seemed important somehow....

Sleep is over rated Kate! That is the best advice my sister ever gave me when I had the should I do X or be sensible and sleep dilemma. At least that advice was good until I had a baby and then every second of sleep I could get started to be a priority. 😊

That's rather disappointing. Did a lot of people gather in hopes of seeing it? Reply to this

Does anyone believe in the solar eclipse being a bad omen?
Today at work, I was eating lunch in the kitchen and a coworker came up to me and told me about the strange things that have happened this week with clients and with employees. Then my other coworkers said "Oh I know why, it must be because of the solar eclipse!" And then coworker #1 went on to talk about how he does actually believe in the moon cycle and it effects our daily life. According to him, whenever something really strange or bad or just plain out of the ordinary, happens, it's always on a day with a full moon.

This may sound rather silly, but in some places and some cultures, people really do turn to the moon to make predictions or for explanations. In North India, would-be-mothers were warned to stay indoors during the eclipse as it was a bad omen. They were also instructed to avoid certain objects like sharp thing. Myths and legends also tell tales of people evolving into werewolves under the full moon.

What about you? Do you believe any of these stories and myths or is it all gibberish to you? Reply to this

People say that full moons have strange effects on people too.

Yeah, I have heard this more than once. Apparently, more police are on duty during full moons too.

Maybe there is something to it. People and animals are effected by energy from nature and the universe. But, I dont think they are necessarily effected in a negative way. And I think many exagerate about the effects.

I saw it in Hangzhou. It was cloudy all morning but the clouds parted just in time for totality. I'll post a blog here when I get around to it. Reply to this
