Do you travel in luxury or travel on a shoestring?

With all the different ways of traveling today, how do you go about doing it? Do you fly in first class while sipping champagne or do you fly chartered flights and sleep at the airport? Do you stay at five-star/diamond hotels or do you stay at hostels?

I've done a little bit of both. The style of travel really affects how you see a city or country. Take Paris for example. When I went with my family, we stayed at the beautiful Paris-Le Grand, enjoyed fine French cuisine, shopped for clothes and fashion accessories, visited art galleries and sipped cafe au laits on sidewalk cafes. On the flip side, when I went with my friends, we stayed at a student hostel, enjoyed a stick of baguette throughout the day, shopped for cheap souvenirs, visited landmarks, and sipped cafe au laits at local bakeries.

Two very different experiences in the same city, but both opened my eyes to the drastically different sides of Paris.

What's your travel style and how were your experiences? Reply to this

When I travel, I have more or less a fixed iti.........like my main agenda. But I leave a few days or longer to "explore" and stay/go wherever I wish. It's a combination of pre-planned+spontaneous mini-trips. I can't say I travel in style, as I usually look around for budget hotels most of the time, yet I am not a backpacker (because I don't have the energy). But yes, I do travel with a bit of luxury. For one, I love eating out. I am not a shopper (well...not really), so I am able to splurge once in a while in a good meal in every place I visit. Reply to this

I like the idea of a combination of preplanned + spontaneous mini trip. Room for changes and its more flexible. Usually my trips are all preplanned to the tee, I think I will try to be a little more flexible like you, for my next trip. Budget hotels are usually what I look for as well, except for the occasional splurge. But food, food is my best friend haha. Even if I don't eat much during the day, I will enjoy a full meal for dinner (whether with friends or family). You can't really "experience" the country unless you've tried the food, right? :D Reply to this

I am certainly not opposed to some luxury, but I generally travel on a shoestring, because travelling on a shoestring means I can travel longer. But, I sometimes splash out on luxuries that I find worth it. Sometimes a particularly pretty hotel, or a particularly good restaurant is worth it.

Yeah, same here. I quite often do things like spend more on lunch, than on a nights accomodation. 😊 Reply to this

'When in Rome, do as the romans do''

Well, they ate sparrows and dormice in roman times and when i visit Rome, i'm going to tuck into something heartier, but I find that a good policy. If i'm on a hippie hangout island, i engage the laidback gear in my brain. If i'm in a posh city, I'll find some great restuarants and spots.

Right!
Isn't it funny how the best places to visit have the best food? Reply to this

I am not completely sure what my travel style would be if I had endless money and limitless time. Maybe circumstances have dictated ''what little style I got''. Reply to this
