Advice needed. Sabah or Serawak during upcoming December school holidays.

Hello,

Will it be a good idea to go to Sabah or Serawak during the December school holidays ?
Are these places affected by the monsson season ?

We usually travel in 2 families. 4 adults and 6 kids.
We are torn between these 2 places as we've never been to these parts of Malaysia.

Which would be a good place to go that both kids and adults will enjoy.
Our preferences would be:
1. Beach resorts with snorkling places.
2. River cruise to experience Borneo beautiful nature.
3. Waterfalls adventure which would be safe for the kids to play in.
4. Shoppin for local soveniers.

Thanks in advance. Your inputs would be much appreciated.

Hi,

All of your points (1 to 4) are abundant in both Sabah and Sarawak. It's quite hard to advise which state to visit as all states that make up Malaysia has their very own uniqueness and beauty, regardless of the December school holidays. Nevertheless, do book tours earlier to avoid travelling with a huge crowd. Whatever your decision maybe, I'm sure you'll have a great time in Borneo.

Have a great trip.

Hello Charlie,
Thanks for the reply.
Do you know how the weather is like in December ?
What I'm afraid is if it's affected by the monsoon then the weather will be wet most days and many of the activities there will not be available.

It's quite unpredictable, really. But I think I can safely assume it'll still be the dry season with occasional showers in late afternoon / early evening. Do check on the weather channel for up to date climate. That way you can plan ahead on what to do at your intended travel destination.

Hello Gai

Borneo is a wonderful part of Malaysia.. You will enjoy borneo alot and you will love it. Now, regarding your trip questions:

1) I would suggest Sarawak for River Cruise ..
2) Mulu National Park. There is no waterfalls but lovely place to relax and enjoy.
3) Sabah for snorkling, Sipadan Island will be the best place.

Please refer to this fourm, iam sure it will help you:

Sabah or Sarawak, please advise

Enjoy Malaysia 😉

Hello Ray,

Thanks for your inputs. Much appreciated.

We would probably shoot for Serawak.
I would love to do both states at one go but since we are also travelling with the kids it may be a little challenging.
Anyway, it will give me a good reason to make another trip to Borneo next year 😊

I'll chk out the links that you provide. Thanks bro.

Hi everyone - I hope you can help us. We need quiet a bit of advice about Borneo. We're planning to fly there from KL around 16th December but only have a week to 10 days there before we need to catch our flight to Singapore for a couple of days then on to Oz.

We basically want to see some Orangutans - as close up as possible, and ideally in the wild and go to see the Turtles laying eggs and/or baby Turtles hatching. So we need to know how to make the best use of our time to do this. Can anyone help with suggestions of where to spend the majority of our stay and where else to travel too?

Also some suggestions about accomodation and best way to travel to each location would be great, we're on a backpackers budget so cheap and cheerful suggestions are best 😊

Any help is gratefully received. Thanks,

Hi JoandJay
Basically there are two places that suit your interests, Kuching and Sandakan as both have turtle hatchery programme off the island and also semenggoh in kuching and sopilok in sandakan. As being a city, Kuching itself has more to offer compared to Sandakan as u can city heritage trail to visit the only white rajah era colonial buildings and tons of meseum around city center. Natural enthusiast can also organize a day trip or a stay in Bako for the infamous proboscis monkey and some wildlifes and trails around the park. There are some homestay programs around Kuching for an unforgettable experience on local hospitality. Kindly check on http://www.journeymalaysia.com/ for more information and inquire any questions at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g298308-i9317-Sarawak.html. cheers
