Alice, we live in Hong Kong now & just love it. There is are loads of suggestions I could have for you but it depends on a couple of things. When will you be in HK? Do you know where you are staying yet? It also depends what you like doing - i.e., trekking? shopping? temples? markets? nightlife? How long do you have? Hong Kong has it all & really is a fab little country/SAR/city/planet of it's own!!!
Also, as long as you can speak English you will not need a translator - HK was a British colony and as such is very "easy Asian" - all signs are in English and most people can speak it aswell. :-) Reply to this

thankyou so much both of you for what information you gave me. Mike and Sarah , you said . It depends on where i staying, and what i like to doing. But, i don't know where is the best funny and exiting place in HK. How about the food and hotel? Does it expensive or normal? Reply to this

Hotels in Hong Kong are expensive in comparison to other cities we have been. If you opt for budget accomodation I would suggest TST in Kowloon as it is cheaper than being on Hong Kong island itself & only a few minutes by ferry to Central Hong Kong. Alternatively try Causeway Bay and Wanchai for cheaper accomodation on HK island. Rooms will be VERY small as space is a premium here! Eating is easy, there are loads of places to eat in local restaurants or any type of cuisine you fancy. I love SOHO which is crammed with restaurants. For nights out you can go to Lan Kwai Fong in central Hong Kong and then Wanchai for later on in the night, both great places to meet people and drink! try to get yourself a Time Out Hong Kong magazine when you arrive and it will have listings of all the things happening in town. It is available in all the magazine stalls in the streets or at a bookstore.

Word of warning, if you are coming to HK soon we are in monsoon season! Thunderstorm warnings today but at least it's 27 degrees outside! 😊

I love the timing of this post because I'll be heading to HK soon as well! What timing, eh? Mike/sarah thanks for sharing the info. I'll be arriving the end of August for 4 days after a while in Vietnam. What would you recommend for a whirlwind tour type of thing. I caught wind of a monster escalator neighborhood, a giant buddah (what kind of large asian city wouldn't have one), and the incredible harbor. I'd like to check out some markets, maybe some historic sites close by, and will most definitely take you up on that nightlife. not sure where we're staying yet, but Kowloon sounds fine. Thanks! Hey Alice, Jon...
I lived in HK for a few years, and there is tons to do but really depends on your budget and whether you have friends in town... a lot of the good nightlife too revolves around underground clubs with lists and that sort of stuff, that unfortunately you won't be finding in any travel guides.
The escalators you mention Jon are the "stairs" they use all over the Midlevels/Soho... in Central. You won't even have to look for it, I used those 3 times a day when living there. Big Buddha is worth it... and the harbor is amazing at night from the Kowloon side. I think every night at something like 8pm they do a firework show still, you can watch it from the Avenue of the Stars in Kowloon. Alternatively, if you want to have a really incredible view, make reservations at Aqua, http://www.aqua.com.hk/, not cheap at all but unbeatable views - I go there with all my friends visiting, and request a table along the windows. Good views too from Central from Isola in IFC2, also gooooood pizzas.
Check out the Peak as well but make sure you go on a clear night - also amazing views, and can make dinner plans up there, tons of restaurants.
The biggest tourist market, think all the ripoff Asian stuff, you are thinking Temple Street market - I think its an MTR stop. Also worth just wandering the streets in Central under the escalators, tons of nice art galleries all around Soho and down towards central.
Getting around is very easy, the MTR is extremely efficient, so clean, and goes everywhere.
HK has some really nice hiking too if you are interested, a lot of people do Dragons Back, and also some nice hiking out in Sai Kung, that was always my favorite, takes you out to a surf beach and secluded fishing villages, but you ahve to take a taxi to a park entrance, then a little boat over, then an hour hike over a mountain.
Sailing is really popular in the summer, ppl living in HK are always taking out junks (old Asian style sail boats) and having massive all day parties on them. Wakeboarding is also really really popular in the summer.
Outside of Central and Kowloon, in the New Territories, I really liked to go motocross racing too. They do have guys out there with a course if you are interested.
I dont know about street food tasing better than the restaurant food... there are some amazing local restaurants in HK!! HK also offers amazing southeast Asian food. Rat alley in LKF has a ton of great Malay/Thai/Viet hole in the wall restaurants, at reasonably cheap prices. can also find awesome Indian food in HK.
HK has a really hip artsy scene as well... check for art clubs, jazz clubs, tons of that kind of stuff happening all over the city. The Fringe Club usually has something going on. Li Dou at the bottom of LKF was one of my favorite bars, also Feather Boa in Soho. Le Jardin (sp?) behind Al's Diner was a cool place to chill out with a beer and get away from the hoity toity crowd.
If you have a few days, it might even be worth it to check out Macau, it is only like 2 hours or something by ferry and super easy to schedule around. Dont forget your passport when you head over though!!
If you want more suggestions on things, restaurants, clubs, bars, just ask. There is too much to type in one response!
Have fun!! and dont worry about the english, especially on the island. Reply to this

hey, if you get overwhelmed with the big city buzz (i did), take off to the 10000 buddhas monastery, take a long walk/small trek around victoria's peak (instead of just staying around the mall), or go further in the new territories (brides' pool, i did a completely solitary 5-hour walk in complete wilderness, wonderful!). also heard that walking the dragon's back was worth it, but didn't do it myself. from a tourist office, you can get the hikes leaflet. enjoy! I missed this thread earlier.
Thanks for the tips.
I plan on traveling to HK the last week of January 2010. May be anywhere for 8-10 days.
These are the places that I have on my list to visit so far: Disneyland, A'ma The goddess of the sea, Man Mo Temple, Lantau - Tian Tan Buddah, Shaw Brothers Studios, Avenue of the Stars. And more.
As for food - I plan on going "local" - I just have to find out where the "spots" are.

I know that the hotels are a bit expensive but I do plan to staying at a good one - I just haven't decided which one yet. I will be meeting some "friends" there but not until the final days. They will either be staying at the Ramada HK or the Cosmopolitan. I am still "stuck" at what hotel to stay at - that's what I mainly need help with. I want a hotel that is easily accessible to everything.

I do want to enjoy the nightly - the clubs, the skylines, fireworks, etc. - this is huge on my list.
My first 6 days or so I will be venturing out alone.

I also plan on taking a side trip either to Macau or the mainland.

Also how is the weather that time of year - end of January / early February?
Will a light jacket be sufficent? or something heavier? Reply to this
