We are due to travel from Bangkok in Thailand, north to Luang Prabang, as to avoid the slow boat down the Mekong river. We have heard lots of horror stories with regards to bad road conditions, mad drivers and bandits on the side of the roads. How true are these. Also some people reccomend taking a mini bus as a smoother ride to LP, but aren't these just packed full with too many people anyway?
Also any advice on the Laos to Cambodia border crossing?
We would appreciate any advice/help.
Reply to this Hi There
Writing from Saigon now but my girlfriend have just travelled from the Thai border in the north west of Laos right down through it and into Cambodia, and all of it apart from the Cambodian entry by land.
The roads are bumpy, the buses are usualy slow in the north but that's more due to the road conditions than anything else.
Overall, we found Laos to be a very safe place and once you get used to some thingts just are the way they are (such as the bus is NEVER too full to acept more passangers and livestock), you will be just fine.
You can check out our blog if you want more info and pics on Laos.
Cheers
