Question about transportation

Hey all!

My boyfriend and I are going from Marrakech to Merzouga/Erg Chebbi in a few months and I'm not finding a lot of options for getting there. I'm on a pretty tight schedule and I'd really like to fit a night in the desert into my schedule. Does anyone know a fast, reliable way from Marrakech to Merzouga? I know I'll be missing a lot along the way, but my main goal is to see the Sahara while I'm there.

Also if anyone has any good ideas about tours that go into the desert for a night, I'd be glad to hear some opinions! Thanks!

Hey Ilchicag;
I'm afraid you need at least 3days (2days stil possible; but it will cost you a fortune to hire a car and driver).
you still can join a tour, I've experienced the desert in a rented car. and went back to Morocco few monthes ago. My recent trip was a three-days , two-nights; There is that company who arrange desert trips from Marrakesh every 5days I think they have a tour on the November 1st to Nov3 .

Thanks everyone! I think I might explore the bus option, even if I have to transfer through Meknes. Though I've read that there is some (perhaps unreliable) public buses that transfer through Ouazazarte and then on to Rissani or Erfoud.

Any other suggestions/insights? Reply to this

hi
you welcome to Morrocco. The public buse is one the better choice via CTM company from Marrekech to Ouarzazate . In Ouarzazate, you could rent 4 WD with driver to Merzouga to spend a night in Merzouga. After, you could head to Méknes from Erfoud before getting you ticket in Ouarzazte. Desert Evasion is very reputable agency in Ouarzazate organizing trips to the desert with good drivers and good services if you would like to get more informed.
GOOD LUCK

hi,
I did that last year. We rent a car and from merzuga we went to marrakech. We spend a couple of days in quarzazate.
I think the best option is renting a car. The car give you the freedom to stop where ever you want and believe me there are many place you feel to stop and take a picture. Enjoy in your trip, and good luck. Reply to this

Hi. There now is a bus directly from marrakech to Rissani (near merzouga) Supratours. You can find then on oncf (the TRAIN website for Morocco). There also is a bus that goes to errachadia (2 hours north of merzouga). From there catch the bus coming down from fes to Merzoga village or take a grand taxt to Rissani and then one to Merzouga.
There also is a Supra Tour bus from Fes to Merzouga village now.

All buses travel overnight and arrive early in the am.
Both CTM and Supratour buses have a lot of tourists. The others are safe but not as comfortable.

It takes 3 days to get from Marrakesh to Merzouga. I would suggest an overnight in Ait Benhaddou then one in dades valley/gorge then head to Merzouga next day. This is done with a hire car.
However, if you are just going to see the desert then why dont you try the dunes at M'Hamid Reply to this

This new bus service has just stated. 8 am to 8 pm each way.
There are dunes at Erg Cheg ga - not at M'hmid.
The camel rides from M'hmid do not go to Erg Chegaga in 2 hours. It is several hours away by 4 x 4.
The dunes of Erg Chebbie are bigger then Erg Chegaga and can be reached in 2 hours Reply to this

i think that the best idea is to take private transportation.
coz the public transportation there sucks .
i and my husband been there twice. our first visit was by public transportation , and it got really ruined. i highly recommend u use private.
i am glad you are visiting that great country which is a total unique amalgam of traditions and modernity. i went there last year, and probably i can assure you that merzouga desert is a must see area. it must not be missed at all.
i loved that area, people are very nice. we had the chance to meet a local nomad family over there thanks to our driver whose ancestors used to be nomads. we had a good experience sharing a meal with them. it was amazing. sand dunes are a total magic.
i hope this will help you decide about your trip , and i hope u will have a good time.
dont hesitate if you need more info and i highly recommend u check this out <snip>
