I\'m quite new here, I\'m searching for location of a big city in the northeast like Korat or Nakhon Ratchasima and wondering no one ever talk about this province / city. It\'s quite a big city, few hours drive from Bangkok. The famous Historical site Phimai is there and also the oldest National Park of Thailand, Khao Yai. Just curious curious! Reply to this

Korat is a bit of the tourist track and does not realy cater too much for non-Thais;or it didn't when I last visited which was a fair while ago I must admit.Western restaurants were very sparse as was accomodation.Everything was written in Thai which made it difficult.Things have probably changed since I was last there though as there is quite a population of Expats living in both Korat and the whole of Isaan.May go again when we visit later this year. I have been to Khorat a few times, the last visit was around 3 years ago.

There is a big mall where you see expats and Farang tourists but not as much as Bangkok or Pattaya. Every now and then you see tourists and expats wandering around the city. Here is a link for "things to see and do" there.

I had no problem finding simple Western foods. Definitely no problem at the mall. When you don't know what to order for Thai food you can always get fried rice. You can find hotels around 500 baht for a room with air and higher priced if you want with a little more luxury. I used the Korat Hotel (KR) for around 500-600 baht a couple times @191 Asdang Road. Avoid the rooms near the disco. Another time I used the Sripatana Hotel @ 346 Suranaree Road. I think that place in off season was around 500-600 baht. The KR Hotel was more convenient for the night/street market.

To get to Khorat you can take a bus from the Northeastern Bus Terminal.
There are other buses available.
I stopped at bus terminal number 2, not far from the Big C Super Center. Terminal number 1 might be more convenient for city stops.

On the way to Phimai there is a nice little archeology exhibit called Ban Prasat.

Phimai is around one hour by local bus from Khorat bus terminal 2.

One reason I went to Khorat was because it is a stop for me on the way to Phimai. I had worked in Phimai a couple times for Earthwatch on archeology digs out of that little town. Phimai is worth a visit. They have a nice restored temple, the Phimai Wat which has a light and sound show. Phimai is a nice little laid back town. They are used to tourists and you can find Farang food if you want. They claim to have the largest banyan tree in Thailand. You can stay at the Phimai Inn located on the by-pass road near the petrol station. This Phimai Inn is almost across the street from the "newer" bus station. "Older" bus station is closer to the wat. The hotel address is 33/1 M.14 By-Pass Rd. This hotel has good Thai and Western food and the rates are very reasonable. They have a pool too. Short walk to the Phimai Wat and town center.

OK, now have fun.
