RTW budget

I am planning a 7 month RTW around 20 countries begining probably May 2010. I want to keep the budget within $20,000 if I could. The RTW ticket I plan to purchase is StarAlliance Y 29000 starting in London and estimate that as being around $4500 with taxes and fees (it\'s considerably higher if I start in LAX). I live in Los Angeles so I will buy a one-way from LAX-LHR for $400-450 here so the total air is $5000. I will not use the last leg of the RTW from LAX-LHR.

Including all expenses (food, lodging, local transport and basic sightseeing) and living in a decent clean hotel/hostel I hope to budget $50/day for the following countries (total 160ish days) - Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Syria, Turkey, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, China and $100/day fo the following (total 50ish days) - Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Brunei.

Note: Spain to Morrocco I plan to do it via the Mediterranean coast going by bus/train to Andorra first and then to Barcelona, to Ibiza, Alicante and further down crossing via Gibraltar.
Thailand-Vietnam-Cambodia-Laos-Thailand-Singapore-Malaysia-Indonesia-Brunei is going to be by land with a return to Thailand (my RTW hub) by a cheap airline like Tiger Airways.

is this realistic? If not, how much should I increase my budget?

Sound nice, you are going to have fun! If you buy the 29,000 in Asia, it is around 3500usd plus taxes...you may want to see it the other way around with a single trip to Asia...never know... Reply to this

thanks! The pound is on the way up against the dollar now but I believe it is $3500 with taxes also from UK, I was incorrect about the price earlier. My itinerary is not finalized of course, I am scheduling it such that I visit Europe/North Africa/Mid East first and then arrive in SE Asia sometime in Nov-Dec when the monsoons have subsided there.

Hopefully the dollar is not going to fall much more between now and then 😞 Reply to this

turkey should go in the $100/day bracket and malaysia could fit in the $50/day bracket - however this is just hostel accommodation not hotels Reply to this
