A few general questions about a trip to Peru

Soliciting Itinerary Advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm just beginning to plan a trip to Peru for the middle of July / beginning of August and I have a few questions. The trip will last roughly 15 or 17 days. This is my rough itinerary at the moment:

Lima (4 days)
Cusco / MP (5 days)
Iquitos (3 days)
Huaraz (3 days)

So the first question is: does that seem reasonable? This was suggested to me by a Peruvian friend but I'd love some second opinions.

The second question is more general. My plan is to book airfare to/from Lima and reserve a hotel for the first three or four nights in Lima and beyond that just to wing it (ie, reserve hotels on line the night before we travel somewhere). From having read various posts on the forum it looks like this has the practical advantage that domestic flights/busses are much cheaper purchased locally and in addition I like the flexibility traveling this way offers. Can anyone suggest any reasons why this might be a bad strategy? Are we likely to find that there are no hotels available on a days notice in (for example) Cusco?

I should also probably mention that my Spanish is somewhere between functional and fluent and my girlfriend (who I'll be traveling with) is a native Spanish speaker, so language isn't really an issue for us. Thanks in advance for any thoughts anyone might have on either question and, of course, I'd also love to hear any general advice anyone might feel like offering.

Arequipa is amazing. Most picturesque plaza i have ever seen. great cheap restaurants and bars. One of my favorite places in South America. Reply to this

There are plenty of hotels in Cusco, you should have no trouble finding one at short notice. I would keep time in Lima to a minimum (one day is enough) and have extra days in Huaraz or Cusco. Or use the extra days in Arequipa and the nearby Colca Canyon. Reply to this

I would cut the time in Lima too!

The itinerary Cusco-Iquitos-Huaraz seems strange to me: mountain clima and altitude mixed with rainforest heat. I would definitely change the order and do the mountains first.

But the whole thing seems like a lot of flying - flights I would book in advance, LAN has a lot of promociones recently. Busses just shortly before - but the only possibility to use one would be Huaraz.

Hotels: can be found plenty everywhere and at every time - but be carefull: end of July are fiestas patrias. It will be busy everywhere! Last year I had troubles finding a spare room in Huaraz.

Arequpia is really recommendable! But, given your time (its already a very tight itinerary), skip it. Reply to this

Ditto. I love Lima. But I've spent time there, and know people there. Under those circumstances, its great. But it tends to be a drag for people who aren't familiar with it (adventurous or not).

So I have to agree with the above, try and work a few days in for Arequipa and/or Colca Canyon. It's worth it. Reply to this
