Hi,
Just wondering how everyone decides where to go next. I have two weeks off work and want to get away for a bit, either in July or September.
In the past i really enjoyed backpacking through south east ASIA, around mexico and interailing around Europe but now cant decide where to try next.
I have been thinking about India ( darjeeling, Jaipur, Agra ect. ), Japan or China but cannot decide. Ideally i would like to have more time to spend going round India so thought Japan may be good. I would be traveling alone if that makes any difference. any ideas or recommendations???? or should i just shut my eyes and stick a pin on the map . The fact that i only have two weeks is making it a difficult decision as its not as much time as i would like,

The best advice I can give is not to think too much - subconsciously there is bound to be one place in your list that you're more excited about going to, so close your eyes for five minutes and decide where you would be most disappointed not to end up.

Hello Mish 😊

If there is a place that particularly interests me I go there. Otherwise I make a list of places that I would like to see and then choose them according to which works out easiest flightwise, visawise, cost of travelling there, safety and general hasslewise.

If all the places on the list are of equal for you, then yes I would use the stick the pin in the map or toss a coin method. I have done that before when I just could not decide.

I have been in both China and India with only 2 weeks. I didnt get to go everywhere of course. I just choose a couple of spots to visit and hung out in them and visited and looked at things I was interested in.

Thanks for the advice. I recon I will plan a trip to Japan and see how I get on. It seems to stick out slightly more and I think there may be more there for me to see to keep me occupied. Reply to this

Choices, choices!! I've been using lately, and have decided that I need a method of some sort to plan through so many tax only deals they have. There are lots of places I'd still like to see domestically, and over seas. I'm not traveling with family, so I'm pretty flexible. Any suggestions on how I might begin to prioritize...?

One of the ways to decide where to do is deciding what is it that you want to do or see. You want to go for adventure sports or hiking or see nature or see one of the seven wonders of the world or do all the desserts in the world etc....

Like a friend of mine is doing the New Seven Wonders this year and is done with three already!

Once you know what you want to do, then you can choose the continent, country and city. Reply to this

Hi Mish!

I think for me, I try to pick times of the year that aren't as busy tourist wise.

Weather also plays a big role in chosing, i.e. I wouldn't go to Cuba during hurricane season. Or be swimming Queensland during deadly stinger season. Or going to South Asia during monsoon. That kind of thing.

Sometimes you want a particular weather, i.e. I plan to take the train across Russia in the winter so I can experience snow and everyone bustling around in big coats and hats. I'm going to try to get to Macchu Pichu during the dry season so the rolling fog isn't as intense. Japan's cherry blossoms are spectacular only in spring.

Its a personal choice of course. Some people would purposely travel during or not during the times I mentioned just for the experience and stories. Reply to this

Hi Andrea,

You are right to put Matchu Pichu high on your wish list.

For myself...I tend to have lots of plans for up to 18 months ahead. It's simply based on 2 things....the time it takes to do the trip....and the money it costs. I've got so many place I want to see that I don't even prioritize...it does allow me to change my plans if a good deal arise. And it's fun to see that there at whichever time, I've got either more time...either more money..so if for the moment I've got more time, I put ahead things that are more time consuming....and next few months should still be fun! Is there a book you have been reading or a show you have seen as of late where you would like to explore where it took place? Reply to this

Hi Pierre-Alexandre! I can barely contain myself, as there is sooo many places I want to see in this world but time and money usually get in the way too! I promised myself on my 40th birthday that I would go to one fabulous place per year. This year I'm exploring all of Cuba for a month, living with families and experiencing the culture. Macchu Pichu is next year and I must start planning now...from what I gather I need a park pass in advance!

I like that you don't plan too far ahead and just go with the flow. Happy travels! Reply to this

Cuba..high on my list also...but won't be for 2009 or 2010!

Matchu Pichu...it's all depend if you want to do the Inca trail or not. Went there twice but never did the Inca trail. They have quotas for it, so this may limit the options, but to simply visit match pichu, youdon't need any permits. You can organize all this simply from Cusco. They have different trains, from the backpacker one...which is very nice....to the Hiram Bingham...luxury train run by Orient-Express....an amzing day...and seriously cheaper than the London-Venise one.

I hope to get back to Peru early december...not done yet, but will be back there for sure next summer... Reply to this

Go Visiting!

I try and pop in to see an old friend somewhere round the world and base my trip around that.
You'll see a completely different side to a place, you'll meet new friends and hopefully you will make your friends feel a bit less isolated where ever they live.
Dont book your flight straight into where they are - then you can shoot off somewhere else overland and go exploring... or even turn up on their doorstep in need of a wash, a feed and a hug!

Its amazing where some of your friends end up - i have friends in Berlin, Tokyo, Oslo and even Kabul!

By the way, good choice if you are going to Japan - plenty to explore and its fascinating. Although recently my friends said it is very expensive now, with the exchange rate.

Nice places you mentioned especially japan but if I may suggest, the place you should be looking into is here in the US. I'm talking of course Hawaii. What I like about Hawaii is kayaking, it was a blast and there's this whale watching activity I've been into and the feeling was surreal, those little giants were awesome! Best bit is its not so expensive and quite accessible with no bomb threats and other stuff. Just look for some Hawaii Tours over the net and off you go.
