Hi! Off to India with a mate in December for 3 months and we're looking to be in goa over xmas and New Year. I've heard the prices get stupid during that period, but can anyone recommend any nice cheap places to stay that could keep us within a £10 daily budget?

Reply to this I found that Mumbai and Goa had higher accomodation prices than the other places I went to in India. For sure book a place before you get there as I didn't and I had to pay about $70 US for a hotel in a crap area of town that I wouldn't venture around. I was in Goa in the beginning of last January and found a place that was about 300 rupees per night which wasn't bad (30 rupees roughly equals $1US).
Once you get out of the big cities (Delhi, Mumbai) I don't think dorms really exist. I did see one but flat out refused to stay in it as it was about 70 cots in one room and it was men who stayed in them (I travelled as a solo female). Though, if you want that local experience, it'd be cheap. I think some places were maybe 75 rupees a night.
If you fly into Delhi, try to have a decent place booked that will pick you up at the airport. I've heard stories that the taxi drivers will tell you your place burned down, or take you to a similar named place which isnt' what you're expecting. Otherwise, just take a taxi to Paharganj and wander the narrow streets and find a place yourself. I think you can get a double room for maybe 150 rupees-300 rupees if you look around.
I agree with Navinkurian - indiamike was where I did a lot of my research and I relied heavily on Lonely Planet.
Reply to this if goa for new years book in advance. was there last new year and paid considerably more than i'd have had to. a couple things to note....the fireworks on the beach are not manned and therefore the drunken indian males who attempt to jump over the launchers between mortars inevitably miscalculate tipping them over, which results in what looks like rpg's being fired shoulder high across the beach. saw it happen at least 5-times and saw numerous people get hit--yes hit with mortars, not pretty. additionally, the beaches are 99 men to 1 woman. depending on your sexual orientation this may or may not be acceptable. if you'd like a more reasonable ratio pay to go to one of the many major clubs surrounding goa with great views of the beach and fireworks.
