Hi I have recently been made redundunt and see this summer as a good time to go travelling as i will have lots of time, but I have never done the whole travelling thing before...let alone with a 3 yr old! Really want to do it though, not sure where to go, where do people stay- in hostels? what are these like? Is the whole thing feesable? and how much money would i need to go for a few months?
Has anybody done something similar themselves?? Reply to this

Hello Charlotte 😊

I havent travelled alone with a 3 year old, but I have with a 5 year old. I went to Thailand. I certainly recommend it as a destination for parents. The Thais love children and are so helpful. Even the traffic on busy main streets stopped for me, so I could walk accross with my daughter.

Double rooms are very economical for a parent and child in Thailand. All the rooms I stayed in with my daugher cost less than 6 Euros per night. This was 3 years ago.

I went to Thailand with my daugher twice for a month each time. Each time we spent 500 Euros between us for the month.

Absolutely safe. You will even be safer with a little child, than you would alone. It is as if you suddenly have a new status amongst the locals, just because you have a child. I even went to the shops for 5 to 15 minutes at a time while people at guesthouses and cafes amused my daughter. I never felt a need to worry about her being left with these people. Certainly not something I would do in every country.

The Lonely Planet guidebooks are very good for this and other information. They are available in most bookshops around the world for around 40Euros. You could go into book shops and take a look at them, before you decide which country you want to go to, to check out the prices and safety issues. That is what I do, to make sure I can afford to travel in the countries I want to go to .

There is a Looking for Travel Companions Forum here on TravelBlog. You could put a post there.

I have been doing it on and off for the last 20 years, both with and without a child.

I (dad) have travelled alone with my daughter when she was 1 year (6 1/2 weeks in Argentina, CHile, Uruguay, Brazil), 2 years (Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan) and 3 years (India&Nepal last summer). You definitely can do it. Budget is very place dependent as well as what kinda places you want to stay. We pretty much stayed in Hostels in South America and small hotels in the other places. I have a blast travelling with her and it is a great way to meet the locals and I agree, I defintely felt safer travelling with her and lots less hastle.

Definitely recommend seeing a travel doc before you go.

You can get lots of info at checking out my daughters blogs but if you need more info, e-mail me at
Dont let kids stop you from travelling, in fact, they make it more fun!

Hello Kari 😊

I dont think this gives you time to go into the city. Airports are just about always safe, so you wont have problems spending the 6 hours there. Look around for parts of the airport with play areas. Some airports have play grounds and childrens corners with toys etc in them.

I haven't traveled with kids, but we stayed in a Berlin hostel where a mother and her kids (there seemed to be at least three kids, maybe four) were staying as well. It didn't seem odd or like it was too much of a hardship. They ended up having a whole room to themselves and interacted with the rest of the hosteliers in the common room and kitchen areas. The kids, for the record, seemed to be about 3 to 6 years old in age.

The other hosteliers didn't seem to mind having small children around either, if that matters to you. Reply to this
