Help planning the North African leg of my trip

Hi all, new to the forum.

I'm a uni student in Sydney who has taken the year (or maybe two...) off to travel. The first few months are dedicated to seeing vast amounts of family and friends in the UK but after that I very much want to see North Africa. I don't have a burning desire to see Egypt, I've heard Libya is a little difficult to get a visa to visit, that Algeria is dangerous but Morroco and Tunisia are highly recomended.

I'm new to this travel thing and am going by myself so would really appreciate a bit of dialogue with some people that know what they are talking about!

I am thinking I am going to spend a couple of weeks in Spain and get a ferry down to Morroco, then travel through Algeria to Tunisia, where I'll catch a flight back to the UK.

Is this do-able? I'm not afraid to rough it and kind of want to mix up my trip with some trashy tourist stuff but also am not afraid to travel rough or wander off the beaten track.

Advice and suggestions please 😊 Reply to this

Hello Daniel and welcome to the fourm!

I took have heard the same things - Libya is supposedly fantastic, but getting a visa is problematic - you need proof of funds, documents translated into Arabic and the list goes on. However, if you persist, it should be possible.

Likewise, Algeria can be a risky venture, but I believe this is restricted to certain border regions, however, it could apply to more areas as well. You would need to do some serious research re the safety of border crossings. Possibly there is an option to get into the country and not put yourself at risk.

I do know of a couple of Australians heading to Algeria in April, if they have anything relevant to report, I can post something further here. Reply to this

If you could pass on your friends experiences both getting there and while there I would be really grateful. Its getting to the time that I really need to get into gear in organising some things. Have you had any experience/heard any stories regarding guided tours or the like in the area, Shane? Reply to this

Hey

I traveled in Morocco with a friend of mine a few years ago (it was just us two girls). it was totally amazing and i highly recommend going. we took the ferry from tarifa, spain to tangier. we never stayed in tangier... instead we went straight to chefchaouen. we didnt do a tour as buses and trains are highly accessible. chefchaouen was amazing. my friend and i were nearly in tears when we forced ourselves to leave. it's not as crazy as the bigger cities like fez so it was a good place to start and get used to the country.

if you are traveling alone i might recommend a tour (or finding a friend!). as two western girls alone we got a lot of attention from people which could be overwhelming for some.

i still remember the names of the hostels we stayed at if you are interested...

oh, bring long skirts and high necked shirts. even if it's hot! have fun! Reply to this

Just to second the guys helpful posts; the North of Morocco is not kind of authentic! the south and Fes Desert plus Marrakesh could be a great spots to explore.
I have stayed at Darnajat in Marrakesh (in the heart of the medina ) whcih costed me 80€; the camel ride was about 40€ (1night); Then stayed in Fes at Riad Tafilalet; they quoted 45€ BB ; i hired a car from Marrakesh and did the whole tour! in your case traveling by coash or public transport will be cheaper and will keep the budget on the normal dgree!
**Sorry i can't help with -Algeria- nor giving info; i heard many dogg stories and i would advise on forgeting it**
Best of luck .

haha! yes, staying away from skirts is probably a good idea. in fact being a guy traveler in morocco is probably much easier than being a girl. luckily i keep a lot of tickets and stuff when i go traveling so i can tell you that in 2006 the price for the ferry from tarifa to tangier was EUR 27.00. The bus from tangier to chefcahouen (the company was CTM) was 35 DH.

The hostel I stayed at in chefchaouen was called Pension La Castellana (C/ Sidi Ahmed el Boihali, n*4. Tel ). The hostel was pretty cheap and amazing. As a guy you'll probably be offered a lot of weed. I met people who bought some and we were all fine. However be careful (obviously) not to get caught.

In fez I stayed at the Pension Talaa. I don't have an address or anything for that one. We took a bus from Chefchaouen to Fez and we were the only tourists on it. We took a train from Fez to Tangier to get the ferry back to spain.

have fun!
oh, speaking french helps!

So it sounds like I can get a ferry for a reasonable price, possibly around 30 euros. What is the public transport system like over there?

And after looking into it more Algeria seems to be out of the question for this trip at least. It seems it will be more trouble than it is worth. Reply to this
