Trips to the Cape from Johannesburg

Can anyone recommend a good trip itinerary to see some of the Cape leaving from Johannesburg?

I will be spending some time in Johannesburg this summer and will have up to a week to travel at the end. Is this enough time to see the Cape, or at least the highlights? Can you recommend any routes or tours? What are the best places to see? What kind of cost am I looking at? Any advice or information would be much appreciated. 😊 Reply to this

Hi Anna,

That's going to be too short to do the Garden Route...at the same time, Cape Town and the wine region is amazing. Try to get a cheap flight to CPT.....you can rent easily a car...and than drive around.

The water front and Roben Ilsand will take you a day. Half a day to go on top of Table Mountain...you could even climb it...

By Summer...you mean Cape Town winter?? Still going to be nice...you could drive to Hermanus, than to Kleeins Bay for some great white shark cage viewing...they call it cage diving...and than finish around Stellenbosch for some wine tasting and great food...

whatever you do...in whatever order...will be amazing there.

Was there last August and I've got an entry on my blog.

Have fun!

Anna,

Peter has good suggestions. A cheap flight with Kalula.com, onetime or SAA will save you a full day that you can spend in Cape Town & area.

Robben Island, Table Mountain and the Cape Winelands are good suggestions. The National Gallery is filled with local & international art. The Castle of Good Hope was build by the Dutch East India Company during the 1660's and is an interesting visit. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, which is the gateway for trips to Robben Island is filled with great restaurants, shopping & entertainment. A day trip to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is highly recommended. It's at the tip of the Cape Peninsula and home to baboons, antelopes & birds. Use Chapman's Peak drive on the way to the reserve and "Ou Kaapse Weg" (Old Cape Way) on the way bag and visit Simonstown (home of the SA Navy) and Vishoek (Fish Hoek) - beautiful coastal towns in False Bay.

Talking about wine - if food and wine is your passion - there are great wine estates & restaurants in the four closest wine growing areas - Stellenbosch Valley, Franschoek Valley, Paarl Valley and False Bay area. A drive to Stellenbosch, Franschoek & Paarl is scenic.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

Johan

I think a week in the Cape is enough time to give you a good overview. You can fly from Joannesburg to Port Elizabeth and drive from there along the Garden Route to Cape Town. A few days along the coast and a few days around Cape Town is worth the visit.

Thanks for all those tips - really starting to make me wish my trip was sooner!! Yes, I meant SA winter (sorry!) I'm going this August.
Has anyone taken internal flights to Cape Town? I had a quick search on the internet and price-wise they seem to be fairly reasonable, but roughly how long would a flight take? Is there a certain amount of time you need to spend in the airport prior to departure, or can one get through pretty quickly? Just wondering if a morning flight would leave an afternoon free for sightseeing or if the travellig is more likeyly to fill a whole day.
Also once in Cape Town, what is public transport like? I am not intending to hire a car so I would be relying on buses, or taxis if they are cheapish. Reply to this

The flight from Jhb to CT takes about 2 h and you need to be at the airport probably an hour before departure. As far as I know there is no public transport to the typical tourist destinations like Table Mountain, Cape Point etc. The best would be to go with a tour operator on day trips. I would not take a taxi for safety reasons.

Regarding transfers. Yes, take a taxi or use the shuttle service offered by the hotel or guest house where you are going to stay. Alternatively, ask the tourist guide to assist with transfers.

Cape Town is a great destination!!! Reply to this
