AUSTRALIA OR EUROPE???

I'm in the military deployed and for my R&R, the military is sending me anywhere I want to go for a couple weeks. Should I visit Europe or Australia????

I'll be traveling most likely solo. Only place in Europe I've been to was Moscow and as for warm climates I have visited Costa Rica and Belize. Plan is to go in late September so I know Oktoberfest will be going on in Munich.
But then in early October is the Henley on Todd Reggata in Australia. Has anyone ever been? Any advice, suggestions,, or experience would be most appreciated. I just want to see some sight seeing but also have a good time in some of the cities for a few weeks. Thanks.

Hello Eric 😊

Nice job you have! How often do they send you where you want for R&R?

Not sure which I recommend you visit. I live in Europe, so if it was me, I would visit Austalia. If both continents seem equally interesting to you, I suggest the tradition coin tossing method of choosing.

Hi Eric,

As a finance point of you, the Australian dollar has basically crashed this year, so you'll find Australia a great value with amazing qualities.

On the other side, even if the euro is down a little to 1.25...it's still pretty high....

In September the weather will be great in Europe...and the crowds gone....but hey, weather is always amazing in Australia...and there are never crowds...

Tuff choice, great choice!

Have fun

Australia!!

hee hee. I am australian.. so obviously I would choose Europe!!

Depends what you are looking for... Europe would win hands down if you are looking for old buildings, museums, Green, you know the old school feeling of Europe.. Australia has none of this as a relatively new country

but if you want animals, beaches, lots of space etc then Australia would be a good option... weather is good in september/october.. it is far too hot from December to March in my opinion!! Reply to this

Europe is much easier and cheaper to get to. If the army is paying for it I would certainly do Australia and save Europe for another time on your dollar. Reply to this

The Henley on Todd, eh?

You get a high five for having even heard of it. 😊 I lived in the Alice for a few months in 2007 while working for a tour company. I missed the Henley because I was out on tour, but other guides shared their photos and stories with me, and it's a riot. I believe it's at the end of August this year though, so your timing is off unfortunately.

You know the basics of the race, I'm sure. It's an annual "boat" race down the Todd River, the only boat race that has been canceled due to water in the river. A good portion of the town turns up, supplied with beer, to cheer on the teams who race down the sandy dry riverbed in a variety of events. Reply to this

Now my Australia fantasy is starting to kick in again. When I imagine being in Australia, I picure myself looking at the Sydeny Oprea House from a distance. I know there is plenty more to Australia than that landmark, but that is the one that I always imagine every time I think about visiting Australia. Reply to this

Australia sounds awesome but I think I agree that Europe is probably easier to get around. And I must admit that going to Oktoberfest while I am young and single sounds fun. I dont know when I'll get another opportunity to do that with out any major obligations and to have the time off during this festival. Can anyone play devil's advocate? Reply to this

It has a become a bit too much of a tourist attraction, in my opinion. But if you do intend to go to it, book accomodation now. It will soon all be booked up if it is not already. Reply to this

Just returned from Australia and it was great! However, with 2 weeks your will be able to see so much in Europe. Travel is easy and the distances not so far. History, Architecture, Art and of course Octoberfest (which is a lot of fun!) September is a great time to visit in Europe...less crowds. Reply to this

This is going to bascially repeat what a fellow Australian - Bobby - said earlier. I would say that the best aspect of our country are the open spaces, weather, relaxed mood and lack of crowds. However, being such a big country, you will not see a lot within a 2 week period as the major sites are dispersed over a wide area.

Europe is the home of grand buildings. history and different cultures all within an overnight's journey of each other. You will get a lot more out of your 2 weeks in Europe than in Australia, where you will have to invest a bit more time to gain the benefits of visiting here.

However, if you do see Europe for 2 weeks, limit yourself to 3 or 4 cities - as each place has its own character. A bit different from Australia where for the most part each of the cities are similar (Melbourne being the exception).
