Hi,
My friend and I are graduating this summer and are both planning to visit South America for 6-8 weeks starting in September 2009. Neither of us have been before and know little about the continent! We do not want to be restricted to an organised tour as we would like the freedom of changing our destinations throughout our visit! As for specific destinations we are both open to suggestions! (We would like to visit a mix of non-touristic places along with popular backpacking destinations).
Could anyone recommend anything like where to start, must see places, hidden gems etc.

if you dont already know spanish then learn some spanish before you come over.
