Travelling Northern India in June and July

When and where monsoon hits
15 years ago, February 17th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #63319
Hi, I am considering spending at least a month in Northern India and Nepal and hopefully do a trek/ climb in the Himalayas. I was just wondering if anyone knew the best places to go and if there are areas that avoid the monsoon. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

If you are looking at treking in Leh-Ladakh area of Northern India then a good time to visit is from June to October. Most of the trekking routes are closed after November due to heavy snowfall.

The best time to visit Nepal is between September and June.

You can also go for treking trips such as Nepal-Tibet-Bhutan or Nepal-Darjeeling-Sikkim tours.

If you only want to trek/climb the Himalayas, then you have Tour Operators from India that take you for Everest Region Treks and you can cover a lot of peaks and mountains in that.

I also found some information on the treking season in Himalayas, which I have added below:

Autumn (Sep-Oct- Nov): The best season offering excellent weather and out standing mountain views.

Spring (March-April- May): The second finest trekking season. The temperature is quite moderate, especially the rhododendrons

are in complete blossom and the mountain views are excellent.

Summer ( June- July-August): this is the most preferable season to trek in the rain shadow areas like Mustang, Upper Manang and Dolpo. These places are out of reach of the rain clouds because of the huge mountains and are unaffected by the monsoon. This season is also recommended for forest researchers and botanist. Warning-raincoats and insect repellents are strictly necessary in this period.

Winter (December- January- February): suitable season for trekking at lower altitude, generally below 3000m.

Feel free to write back, should you need more details.

My timing was pretty good (and pretty lucky) for trekking there -- July for Leh and November for the Annapurna in Nepal. I seem to remember that these were the best times to go on both trips.

Reading Tanya's comments above, I guess I got lucky, because I didn't have insect repellent or a raincoat when trekking near Leh! Reply to this
