Silly question, but what footwear do people use for the Inca Trail/similar?

I had hiking boots on the Trail. A few people had sandal type footwear though, and were fine because the weather was good - no guarantees with that one though.
Anything with a good sole would prob be sufficient, ankle support as well would be even better.
