The rainy season in North Queensland will last until early-mid April, and is normally characterised by humid, hot, and sunny days with exciting afternoon storms followed by beautiful dry evenings. However, if the rains stay in one area for long (normally through cyclones or tropical lows), then floods will resut.
Likewise, the difference in weather in Sydney between mid February and the end of March is not that different - it is generally dry and sunny. The weather starts getting a bit damp in Sydney once autumn has set in more (such as during April).
So it does not really matter which direction you go - as the weather will be fairly constant during this six week period.

I live in Australia and the news tonight said 60% of Queensland is flooded but its mostly the rural areas. They've been hit by one storm after another this season but the flood waters go down pretty quick so it'll probably be clear by the time you get there, as long as they don't get another cyclone.
At the moment, Townsville is completely closed off.
Whether you go Cairns to Sydney or vice versa it will still be the wet season so hopefully the timing will work out for you.
Goodluck and have fun!!
Reply to this Friends of mine who rented a car in Cairns and were driving to Sydney had to turn around because of the flood waters. Hopefully it will be cleared up by the time you get here but if not just fly. That will teach you for going to Sydney and not Brisbane, it hardly ever rains here 😉
