Hi Silvio

How about booking a guesthouse in advance, and arrange for them to pick you up from the airport? If you really want to avoid hassle when you arrive it might be worth spending some extra cash on your first night's accommodation.

We stayed at the Manh Dung guesthouse last time we were there, although it wasn't that cheap ($18 a double room), they were reliable. The first time we fly into Hanoi, we took an airport minibus ($2 each) and told them to take us there. They did the scam where they told us it was full and took us to it's 'sister' hotel, which had nothing at all to do with it.

You could try and get a minibus/taxi to simply take you to a street with a lot of guesthouses on in the old quarter and then take a look around yourself. Manh Dung is on Tam Thuong St, there are a lot of guesthouses around there. Just pretend to the driver that it's not your first visit to Hanoi.

As for the tours, every guesthouse and tour operator is selling tours to Halong Bay and Sapa. Again, take a look around and find out what people are offering. Take a look at www.travelfish.org for a discussion on Halong Bay tours. Sometimes you don't get what you are sold/think you're getting.

The 2 day trip is one night in Halong Bay on the boat. The 3 day trip is one night on the boat and one night on Cat Ba island in a hotel.

Have fun,

We used Vega travel for Ha Long Bay and also for Sapa. Take a look at our blogs for the pics and write up of the trips we did with them. Reply to this

Well you should always set your plans in advance for the best trip, and to avoid scams.
