Do you have holiday/travel romances?
10 years ago, January 26th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #61338
When I was single I used to have some romances when I was travelling. Meeting and sometimes dating some of the exotic guys I met was part of the general fun of travelling.

I have been advised that I would be wise to point out here that by romance and dating, I do not mean sleeping around. But if dating means sleeping around for others, by all means tell your stories. Reply to this

However, I did fall for the cheesy romantic rubbish to the extent of making a second trip there. After a few weeks of promising me the moon and the stars and all that, The lovely romantic stuff did not come to much, the trip cost me way more than promised, and i felt like it was just about having a quick shag. Of course, it could just be one of those things where people aren't the same as what you thought, that's nothing to do with the place or where they come from, just doesn't always happen how you think it will. Especially if you allow yourself to get caught up in some romantic charm. And they can certainly be charming! The fact that makes me think that there is something not so nice going on here is that one of his friends also had a girl over at the same time, she had also been persuaded to come back (quite a long distance) by lots of telephone romantic charm, and she was treated rather badly, again disagreements over money (we had both gone to spend time with someone to get to know them, not spend lots of money on a tourist trip), and was treated unpleasantly when it didn't work out. I am sure there are some cases where it does work out, but in general it seemed that respect towards women was somewhat lacking!
Romantic gigolos exist in lots of places not just there and are known worldwide to prey on single women travellers who are vulnerable to the whole schmooze stuff. Just think - would I do this at home? I know I wouldn't have done. No matter how much i liked someone. Moral of the story girls!!

For some reason, while visiting other places I seem to meet guys that are from or near my home state. It's not that I don't like exotic guys either; I guess it's just a small world. I did meet some German guys in New Orleans who were really fun and def loved to drink.

Does it count if I met the love of my life traveling?

I'm not much of a flirt, but something about being in a new country gives you that extra confidence, or maybe it's the relaxed, carefree attitude because it's a vacation... Reply to this

Or maybe it's just down to having time to get to know people, or meeting people of a similar wavelength, or meeting way more people than you ever would back in "real life". Reply to this

While travelling I focus more on myself, and I am more relaxed. Had some minor relations around, but nothing serious.

It is not the exoticism though, but more the inner attitude while travelling and finding new things. Reply to this

my whole blog is based on the pursuit of finding love and the more physical pursuit that young males search for (when I don't have a person I'm particularly in love)...

sadly, I have had close to 0 success at finding love. Or rather, I've found in but the feelings weren't mutual or I was too shy to follow through or a well timed interruption stopped me from stating my feelings...

I think almost everyone has had some type of romance whilst in an exotic country. Most people tend to drink more alcohol, I know a lot of Brits will be in their swim suits the second they feel the sun so a lot more flesh will be on show, everyone is happy to be somewhere that is 'different' from where they live & you are guarenteed to meet someone you have something in common with as a lot of other people will also be in the same position. I had a holiday romance when I was 19 that turned into a 2 year relationship but things are VERY different once you are back home. Reply to this

Timely post..I met my partner in Thailand (we are both Aussies who lived in the same state about 100km apart - we now live together a year and now 8 countries later) - There is an element of truth about the Romantic Gigolos and Chris and Nikkis comments - they are everywhere except PNG. Looking at it from a locals viewpoint..along come women who are wanting to get some sun and into a bikini and party hard and drink big, easy pickings. Ive met a few ladies and guys who have local boyfriends/girlfriends and are going through the long distance relationship, sending money, spending up to go back to spend more time with this wonderful exotic lover on a tropical island. Have only met a few people who have managed to transport the romance back home and have it work. Just last week in Indo we met a young swedish lass who was crying on a beach alone..she had travelled all that way to suprise her fiance - who was unfortunately busy with his American Fiance.

For the record..I do think we OLD people travelling helped cheer her up when we took her out for her first scuba dive. Poor girl had been sending this guy money for a year to help him financially. I wonder how many girlfriends, fiances and how much money he had raked in over the years.

Not to say it doesnt always work - we are very happy together - at home and on the road. Reply to this
