How to divide up various sources of cash in case of theft

Hello all,

I bought a money belt for carrying my passport and credit cards when I'm travelling from place to place. But in terms of walking around in cities and towns, I assume I will lock up my valuables at the youth hostel and only bring a small amount of cash and/ or debit card with me. So, how to carry these things with me when I'm walking around in town? I've heard I should avoid using a purse of any kind, and yet putting money in my daypack seems risky as well.

How to arrange things so that you will always have a source of cash, even if one or all of your bags get stolen? Reply to this

secret pockets is one option.
you can take them from other clothes and sew or have them sewn into your clothes.
never a bad idea to keep some back up money in a secret pocket. but it must be at arms reach if your in a sticky situation and need it.

i removed the back pockets off a pair of pants and sewed them into the inside of another pair, either side of the front zipper. works perfect. Reply to this

Keep a little bit in various easily accessible pockets so that it's not obvious where all your money is kept. Maybe keep one small note in your back pocket in case of theft - pickpockets will usually grab what they can and run without checking how much they have. Taking a second debit or credit card to leave in the hostel for emergencies might be an idea so you're never stranded without money. Reply to this

Hi Emma.

According to my experience, I usually take some USD 500 per trip, 2 debit cards and only 1 credit card. Both debit and credits cards should be accepted by Cirrus and Maestro and Visa ATMs (on the back of them you can check them).

By this you are not exposed to lose your cash money but only using it when you arrive into a new country and need pocket money for taxis, etc. You can always take with you 1 credit card and 1 debit card and some pocket money and leave in your hotel 1 debit card hidden among your belongings. If it happens that you lose it in the hotel, nobody will be able to use it. On the other side, if you are unfortunate to lose your other valuables that you always carry with you, you will have one spare debit card in your hotel to cover your payments. Am I too complicated?

In South America you will always find ATMs at any country. Just be carefull to take money out in safe places like inside hotels or inside banks just for precaution.

I expet the above could be useful to you.

I always keep some extra money in one of the 'pockets' the pad goes in in a push-up bra, then a few dollars (what I can afford to lose) in my purse or pocket.

If you're worried about losing debit cards/ID, it might be a good idea to authorize someone you trust at home to be able to access your bank account while you're gone. It's alot easier to have them go and pick up a new debit card and FedX it to you than it is to try to get one sent through a bank in another country (especially if you've lost your IDs!)

Someone also told me to scan copies of my passport and other ID, and email them to myself, in case they get lost/stolen.
