Hi, anyone know how long it would take to drive (or train) from Dusseldorf to Prague (ballpark)? I only have 3 to 4 days to do this so I want to know if it's worth the drive... otherwise, any recomendations on other upbeat places to go to in Germany? Reply to this

I took a night train from Frankfurt to Prague.... so from Dusseldorf it would be about the same if not a bit longer. Think the night train was about 8 or 9 hours total. You could probably catch some faster trains in the daytime. If you needed to get back to Dusseldorf from Prague all in 3 days, maybe not worth it. Even on a quick whizbang tour of Europe, you'd want to give Prague 3 or 4 full days if possible.

I can't recommend anything in Germany though. I really wanted to hit up Berlin for a few hours on my way out of Prague, but I missed the early train and threw off my whole schedule. I wanted to at least take in Checkpoint Charlie on my way to Paris. :-\ Oh well. Reply to this

Prague is a nice town to visit, indeed. Take a night train to safe your days!

There's so many nice/romatic places around Germany you can visit during your stay.
From Dusseldorf you can take the route - Colloge - Trier - Manneheim - Munich - Nuremberg!

Enjoy

as someone said before, i would not go to prague, as you need at least 2 days.

however, rather have a bit of a look around germany. cologne is less than an hour away from duesseldorf - the main thing you want to see is the cathedral, which is right next to the trainstation, so at least jump out and check it out.
bonn is very nice as well - another 30 min. south from cologne, very nice along the river, with many nice cafe's. - i can also recommend aachen (45min from cologne to the west), very nice city centre, with many old buildings, the kaiser dom is very interesing too. from aachen it is very easy to get to other counrties as holland.
if you have a bit more time in germany i would possibly go to the cities someone mentioned before - mannheim, nuernberg, muenchen...(heidelberg should be in that route as well then!) the cities i love are berlin, hamburg, bremen. but you will not find any person in lederhosen there!

sorry forgot - should you go to cologne, aachen and other cities further south, make sure you drink many local beers as they are very different. beer from cologne is only served in 200ml glasses - than futher in the south you can order hefeweizen with banana juice in it, very interesting taste.... enjoy...
