I´m female, on my own and travelling through a bit of South India in December. I´m thinking of spending five days through Cochin, Varkala and the backwaters of Kerala. Does anyone recommend any great but cheap accommodation? Preferably beach in Varkala. Then I´m travelling further south to an ashram where accommodation is sorted. All I need now is the first part of my trip to be finalised.... thanks for your help! Reply to this

I can recommend u one place...It is my uncle's house.. you can stay with the family consist of Uncle, his wife, and their 4 yr old grand daughter..But its not at fort cochin. but near to it 3 Km and a ferry distance.

they are not into professional home stays...

But u can enjoy the foods in local taste especially fish. Fish is one of the main menu here.

Important note:- No payments will be accepted for service.. Only thing U will be an esteemed guest.. and to share the experiences from your country...

Hi Lidia - at the end of 2006 I stayed in the hotel park avenue in fort cochin - at that time it was rs400 a night for a double room, so would've been half that for a single - might be a bit more now, but still very reasonable. The place was clean, friendly, think it may even have had hot water sometimes, and had, for India, not bad internet at all, ie not too slow! They also had a rooftop cafe which wasn't brilliant, but ok enough for snacks, in any case fort cochin has really nice places to eat. the hotel is very central to fort cochin, easy walking distance to all the local shops and cafes.
ps - are you going to the sivananda ashram in Kerala? - I went there! Reply to this

Personally I would stay in Fort Cochin,The Chiramel residency is reasonable and central. There is a lot to see in Cochin and its very relaxed and easy going. You can catch the ferry to Ernakulam but personally I found it to be just like any other big city, nice for a few hours but I was glad to come back to Cochin for the peace and tranquility.

Its all down to choice I suppose, read through the LP and you will see the wealth of things to do and see in Cochin.
Have a great trip.
