I visit heavy metal clubs and bars when I am in places where I feel it is safe to be out late at night. I also spend some time walking around the area and hang out at cafes.
If I am not in a place where I feel safe to walk around at night I hang out at the hostel or guesthouse and read, use the internet and chat with the other people who are staying there.

Reply to this I like going walkabout and people watching.
Some of my best evenings on the road have been sitting round with fellow hostelers and just chatting. Once was at a hostel in HK, outside every night looking down on the harbour til the early hours. Another was in Tasmania - about 20 of us got a Japanese guy who was staying there who was really good at drawing to do a cartoon portrait of each of us :-)
Reply to this haha! I like it!!
LOADS of different stuff, depending on mood, location & money!!! I love getting to know people in the hostel/hotel & having dinner so that features heavily!
Reply to this As Mel said, it really depends on where I am. If i'm somewhere that the nightlife is very good (e.g. when I was in Buenos Aires), I love to be out and about with people. If I'm traveling with my significant other, I often like to just do a nice long dinner with a bottle of wine and relax and visit. And as Joe said, when I''m traveling solo, I love just meeting people where I'm staying and getting to know them, chatting, etc.
