There are plenty of hostels -mostly in the area around the Mariscal. Quality can be mixed and they are not always strong on security. When booking, remember that 22% tax will be added to the bill. If you want somewhere slightly quieter (and probably cheaper) then try areas like La Floresta.

Alternatively you can book short stay apartments from $50 per day which is very cost effective if there is more than one of you -just do a search on Google. Reply to this

Most people stay in the Mariscal but if you fancy something different there are two hostels in San Blas, close to the old town.

Hostal San Blas is a nice, quiet hotel/hostel with internet, kitchen and rooftop view. There is another very popular hostel one street over, called The Secret Garden, which all the guidebooks recommend and which is run by gringos for gringos. It's a great place to meet people, but a bit overpriced and noisy. Reply to this

I also stayed in the San Blas Hostal. I agree totally with Barry. And if you want some more action, drinks, food, checking out trips etc. you always can go to the Secret Garden as a visitor. You're more than welcome there. Reply to this
