Do you really need to wear clothes to bed? And after sunset do you need to be fully covered?

Do you have to bring a net?

Does the vaseline trick (adviced in the topic bedbugs) also work for cockroaches?

Well I guess the Mosquito repallnet will be so useful for you. Try to get it from Thailand or any other country there, make sure it have "DEET" on it. Normally they will write the percentage of the deet on the prodcut, 70% , 50% , 90% , etc .. My self i took the one with 95% last time.

The Malaria Pills will be a great idea, but in some area's only in Asia, I dont think so u need it every where u travel around Asia. My self i have not used it at all.

Mosquito net , will be a great idea. just to protect your self more in some places. I was thinking of taking one with me for my next trip.

Good luck 😊 Reply to this

Hello Melanie 😊

If you are going to a high risk Malaria region you can take Malaria prevention medication such as Doxycycline or Malerone. Check the WHO(world health organisation) to see if you will be in a Malaria risk region.

You can also spray yourself with a repellant containing DEET to prevent being bitten.

You dont need to stay fully covered but it is wise to do so , to prevent being bitten. Mosquito bites can itch quite a lot.

I wouldnt bother carrying around a mosquito net but one would help keep from being bitten at night if you do want to carry one.

I think the DEET repellant would also keep away bed bugs. Appart from leaving itchy bites these bugs are harmless.

Cockroaches are also harmless. I just sweep them out of my beachhut or whatever with a broom. You can also spray your room if you really want. But that would involve trying to figure out the instructions on the spray can in a language you may not be familiar with.

haha.

ut that would involve trying to figure out the instructions on the spray can in a language you may not be familiar with.

That would be funny.

We would try and spray as little as possible with stuff as my fella is astmatic.
but most of the places will provide nets thought wouldnt they?

I am not scared of cockraches I just find them a bit creepy, crawling over you at night. But I can handle them!

thanks again.

Not all. Also if you want the net to be very effective the thing to do would be to have your own impregnated with Permethrin one. You could also impregnate your clothes with this if you are going to have it with you. But DEET repellant is very effective. You dont really need a net unless you are travelling in a very high Malaria risk country in Africa.

Cockroaches tend to stay on the floor or walls. They wont crawl on you while you sleep. They dont like light so if you leave your bathroom light on that will likely be enough light to keep them under the bed. Be sure to close your bags because sometimes they go in there. Also dont eat in your room or keep any food there unless it is packed in well sealed tubberware. Sometimes there are ants which can bite holes in plastic wrapping so that is not always enough to prevent attracting cockroaches.

If you plan to stay in crappy cheap places then you may have more bugs and mosquitoes to put up with. If bugs are a big concern move up to a better place to stay at.

If you stay in slightly more expensive hotel rooms with air conditioning you might have fewer bugs hanging around. With the windows shut you don't have so many mosquitoes flying around. You can use deet if you see any or are very worried.

Sometimes you have more cockroaches when the hotel/hostel room is real close to a restaurant.

I have never come across any bedbugs and I have been in lots of hotels over the past 25 years - maybe I just haven't noticed any but I have been called "thick skinned" and probably didn't feel anything! If you are worried about them then then you can bring your own sleep sack. Get your own linen washed before you go home so you do not infect your own home if you do come across bedbugs.

Malaria pills. Some long time expats say you don't need them in Bangkok and some other places but you still read about someone in the city coming up with malaria.

I know I have been on airplanes that have had mosquitoes flying around so it is not a far off thought that mosquitoes could be trapped in rail cars that come from the Thai border areas that are more malaria prone and those mosquitoes show up even in Bangkok. Then you have to be the unlucky person who gets the one infected mosquito in Bangkok that bites you. Doxycycline is pretty cheap, about 3 to 7 baht per capsule from a Thai pharmacy. There is some light sensitivity and some other problems that you have to check out. If you do go with malaria pills you have to start them a few days before you enter the "malarial zone" to be effective.

Sometimes you eat dinner and sometimes you are the dinner!

I worry more about bringing some bugs back home and infecting my house than having them bug me overseas.
