Anyone been to Lombok (near Bali)? I am wondering how safe you felt and the overall experience while there. Also any hotel recommendations... inexpensive but comfortable and safe would be nice. Thanks in advance. Reply to this

Hmmm... Lombok. I felt safe. Never ever felt even the slightest bit menaced. But that's my experience and probably one shared by most guys, but probably not most girls. On one occasion on Lombok and several on other islands (not Bali or the Gilis) I had came to the "rescue" of western girls. By rescue, I mean I visibly accompanied them from point A to point B. The locals didn't even glance at me when I was with them, but the girls told me they had been physically harrassed when I wasn't there. I guess the point of this story is that you are perfectly safe when with a guy. Four girls on their own got harrassed; four girls with me didn't even attract glances. And trust me, I'm no Jean Claude van Damme.
You should be safe on Lombok, but if in doubt, latch on to some guy, even if he has four girls latched on to him already and is aged nine, and you'll be perfectly safe. Reply to this

LOL OK. Doesn't sound TOO appealing. But I would probably be traveling with one or more guys so guess that's better.

Any hotel or activity recommendations? Reply to this

You'll be fine travelling with guys. Gilis were great. As for hotels, when I was there the place was going bankrupt because of the bombs. I don't imagine that tourism has returned in force, so you shouldn't have much difficulty in finding a decent hotel anywhere. Reply to this

A good hotel not expensive in Senggigi area : Puri Senggigi Rp 150 000 & Sunset Homestay at Batu Bolong Beach at Rp 250 000 nett. You can find on the internet sunset homestay hotel.
In Gili Terawangan there are many hotel from Rp 100 000 or more...I went to Pondok Wildan Rp 100 000 nett per night. It is a place where many diver stay.

I will go to Lombok 25 March-29 March to Tanjung Ringgit with a group of friends 9 girls from Jakarta and 3 guys from Yogya. My local friend live in Praya. We will go to Tanjung Ringgit and eastern coast of LOmbok.
It's backpacker trip will cost Rp 270 000 nett per day including accomodation, transport, etc.
See my blog regarding the hidden beauty of Tanjung Ringgit, east Lombok.
