Window or aisle?

Which is your first choice when flying?

If I am flying for more than a few hours I choose aisle so I dont need to disturb anyone if I want to walk around or go to the bathroom.

If the flight is a few hours or less I choose the window for the nice view.

Ha! Ditto for me :-)

I was stuck in the window seat (had to get a replacement flight after tickets etc were stolen, so didn't get choice of seat) on an 11 hour flight once - and both of the two outside me were heavy sleepers!! Reply to this

I choose window if available. Taking off and landing you sometimes
get nice pics, same goes for level flight if the weather is clear. Imagine
flying over the Alps or Himalaya on a clear day.

I'll always regret not having my camera ready when we landed in Singapore.
The airport is really close to the city and the views were amazing.

On a more practcal issue. I travel with my wife and we try to get a slot where
there are only two seats, window and aisle. That gives us lots of privacy. Reply to this

I always choose window for the view, because I am claustrophobic, and it helps to look out the window.....

When I travel with my 7 year old daughter I try to get us a row with just 2 seats and near the toilets. She wants to visit the toilet several times per hour. I think it is because she gets to use the hand cream and cologne that is often in there rather than actually needing to use the toilet.
And she always demands the window seat and I give it to her even though I want it too. At least she is small enough so I can lean over her and look out the window too.,

I try to get aisle, as I get motion sickness very often and I realised that, if I am on a window seat, I feel the movement of the plane much more when it changes direccion... Dax thinks I'm silly but, it works for me!!!... he prefers window as he is like a 12 year old boy and gets super exicted with the views...

We also try to get the emergency exit seat, as you have more room leg!!, but in many companies you have to pay an extra for that... Reply to this

Last time I flew they offered me the emergency exit seat because I am tall, even though I was flying out of an airport in Germany and I am not exceptionally tall by German standards. They didnt make me pay extra but they did make me promise that if there is an accident I will help the other passengers to get out the door. It would have been cheeky if they had asked me to pay more as well as agree to be the last out of the plane when it is about to crash. When I went to the bathroom before the flight took off somebody took my emergency more leg room seat. I let her keep it and sat someplace else, but I did wonder if somebody is inconsiderate enough to take somebody elses seat, could that person possibly be considerate enough to help everybody else out of the plane first in an emergency. :D Reply to this

Well, to be honest, the only time they tried to make me paid was with Virgin Atlantic on the way back from SF, and they were asking for an extra $75 which I thought it was a joke... but it wasn't and, to make it even more funny (for them), they sat us on the seats just BEFORE the emergency seats, so all the extra room was at our back... also, they gave us window seats... but we could jump over them to go to the toilet, instead of disturbing the sleeping lady next to us, so it wasn't too bad...

Lately, we've been only traveling in Europe, mostly from England (where we live) to Spain (where I'm from) and Germany (where Dax is from) so we use low fare companies and they don't even give you a seat number... first come, first serve... of course, you can pay a bit extra and have the right of boarding the plane first and then choose your seat before everybody else!!!

I think it's quite rude to take someone else's seat, specially with a company that, actually, gives you seat numbers... and quite funny to tell you to be the last one leaving the plane in case of an accident... who's going to check that??, and how do you know how will you react in a case like that??, maybe you panic and freeze, so letting everybody else get out first... but maybe you panic and start pushing people out of your way so breaking your promise... ;oP Reply to this

Emergency row seats are my next choice after aisle. There's usually extra safety demo information (or just a card on the seat specifying what could potentially be required if you choose to sit there). I don't recall them actually saying you must be last off - you could interpret 'assist' as jumping out first to show them the way down ;-) Reply to this

I mostly take window, but actually I don't really care anymore... I like the window because I can lean my head on the side when I want to sleep and for the views... I like the aisle for the fact that I don't need to disturb anybody if I want to go to the toilet... I quite often get half full planes, so I have 2 or 3 seats for myself, I can choose any seat I want :-)

If you are sitting at an emergency exit they always tell you that you need to help, but that means you need to know how to operate the emergency door, I have never been told that I would have to help with getting the people of the plane... But they just tell me how the door works and to read through the little leaflet carefully so I know what to do... So I would open that door and hop on out, no way I am staying inside a plane till the bitter end, I am no hero :-)

And taking your seat is outrageaous! I didn't know it was possible on planes, except maybe on Ryanair, where it is everybody for him or herself as far as it comes to seat arrangements... Reply to this

Well, I got my revenge on the seat stealer by thinking it will serve her right if an emergency happens. :D

LOL
That is how I will interpret it in future when I score the emergency seat. :D Reply to this

The plane was half empty so people could get up after everybody is seated and choose a place to sit with more room. She probably thought she can choose just about any seat because there were so many free.

Lesson learned
If you have the emergency seat and you need to use the bathroom be sure to put your bag and jacket on it to mark your territory. :D Reply to this

I'll take the aisle on long journeys, can stretch my legs out to the side and usually I'll be flying at night so no need for the view. Anything but the middle seat with a person on either side!

One bad point about the aisle seat is I always feel inclined to stay awake or at least not sleep that long in case either of the two people beside me need to use the toilet! On a long flight I did fall asleep for quite some time, when I woke up the girl beside me looked so frantic and relieved, unbuckling her seat belt and practically jumping over me to get to the loo!! Not a single time of the few I seated on the emergency exit seat, was told how to open the door... never... but I was told that I couldn't have my sweater on my lap, but it was ok when I put it my shoulders!!!... security reasons, they say... that was with Ryanair and I think we all know they're a different story... ;oP Reply to this

If I'm flying with people i know. I care a lot less where I sit because i don't feel as bad making them get up if I have to use the restroom or move around. However, if i'm flying solo I take the aisle so i can get up without disturbing others.

As for the emergency exit, I am generally just told I am sitting in the emergency exit row and that I have to be aware of that in case of an emergency and told to read the pamphlet in my seat. Once in Brazil though we were seated in the emergency exit row and they moved us b/c we don't speak portuguese and in an event of an emergency wouldn't understand the instructions - which does make sense! I am like Mel and Jo and sit aisle for long trips, and window for short (not over the wing though, if I can help it). I am 6'3" and still can't master the knack of getting an emergency row seat. I have a bad left hip (broke it, two surgeries, and then a total hip replacement last year) so I try to sit right hand side, aisle seat, so I can stick my leg out into the aisle. But a few times I fell asleep like that and the air host/hostesses ran over my foot with the drinks/dinner cart LOL.

I fly military hops a decent amount, which are mostly on C-5 Galaxy cargo planes (sometimes DC-10 radar trainers, Re-fuelers, etc). The seats face the tail, and there are two small windows in the aft exit doors, thats it. But, the seats are huge, and you can pull out the arm rests, pick up extra pillows and blankets, and make a couch-sized bed and go to sleep. There is also no drinks cart or food service, just a $3 box of sammies and snacks, and the flight crew passes around a ziploc baggie of earplugs. lol. An actual drip coffee pot and some water are usually at the back. All in all, its the best way to fly. Did I mention its free? 😊

At the end of the day anything, anything, anything, but the middle, with strangers on either side. *toooortuuure* Reply to this

I think its kind of funny how in a lot of European countries, its is normal not to have an assigned seat on an airplane, but normal to have an assigned seat at a movie theatre.

I vote aisle or emergency row for long legs and the freedom of getting up and walking around when you want to! The only exception has been when flying over something picturesque (like into Nepal from India or over Machu pichu on way into Cusco). Reply to this

It's aisle seats every chance I get. I love everyone who prefers the window! More aisles for me to stretch my legs and walk around at my own leisure! 😉 Reply to this
