Anyone know the best way to set up a cell phone that I can use throuhout Southeast Asia?
I'm going to be travelling in south east asia for four months and am hoping to set up a cell phone that will give me service in as much as possible of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Camobodia. I'm not sure what's available there. Is it easier to set something up from home or are there good deals there? I'm leaving in two weeks so need some quick info! Thanks!
Reply to this buy a pay as you go sim card out in thailand, much cheaper than using yyour home one.
i'm on a 1-2-call dunno about other networks tho..
300 baht for the sim and you buy money to top it up from, easay to call and text home as well as very very cheap local calls,
hope this helps, check out my blog

Reply to this Aye, that's what I did but I bought one with D-Tac but it only works in Thailand, no joy in Cambodia or Laos and I'm assuming it'll be the same in Malaysia when I get there in a couple of days. They're pretty cheap all over though so a lot of people just buy them for each country as they go along, make sure your phone's unlocked so you can use other sim's apart from the one it was originally locked to though.
Reply to this in Vietnam, you have to decode your fone to use mobile service here. You can do it very easily by going to any mobile shop when you get here.
Reply to this You can also get sim cards in different countries so that the same phone works in many. I don't know if Laos and Cambodia are set up like Thailand but we had a phone that we were able to use in quite a few places in SE Asia, we just had to get new SIM cards and when we returned to Thailand, we just put the old one back in and it worked fine (as long as you don't let it expire without minutes). Japan and Korea and I believe China all have different systems so you can't use the same prepay phones from SE Asia there...
