hey all,
new to this forum,
basically im planning my gap year trip which starts around jan/feb 09 and will take me through Argentina Brazil Mexico and USA.
i was just wondering if an average spend of £20 per day to buy everything i need including accomodation at hostels (prepared to stay in tents if no where cheap can be found on some nights).
is £20 reasonable?
im from argentina myself and lived in the UK since i was 11, im 18 now, and i think this would be reasonable but obviously someone that has been there recently will have a better idea!
thanks for your help, much appreciated!!
Reply to this Sounds reasonable to me. Travelling as a couple, we've spent on average 30 pounds per day between us in Latin America. Travelling solo can sometimes be more expensive in hotels but if you stay in dorms in hostels you should be fine. Airfares and one offs like tours make it hard to stay in budget, though if you are a citizen of Argentine you should be able to get cheaper fares in that country.
Reply to this If it helps for 2 of us we have been travelling around on a joint budget of a strict $80 New Zealand dollars a day (basically £30). We've not stayed in dorms, always our own room and the vast majority ensuite. Some days its been a bit tough to stay on budget but other dys are easy and it has averaged out. We did have a small pot of a 500 NZ dollars for one off tours etc though so that we didn't feel too limited by our budget.
Reply to this thats cool mate that really helps, sounds really cheap!! thanks
Reply to this My wife and I are in Lima, Peru and averaging about 30 US dollars a day for both of us including lodging. I think Brazil and Argentina are a little more expensive, but I'd amagine you could stay under budget.
Reply to this Another thought, we found that many places to sleep listed in the Lonely Planet have put their prices up or aren't actually the cheapest (particularly in Colombia) we now aim to head to the cheapest place listed in LP and hunt for something else on the way. For example today we arrived in Taganga on the Colombian coast and the 2 cheapest hostels in LP now charge 40,000 and 35,000 pesos each for a shared bathroom, but we looked around and found somewhere for 25,000 ensuite.
We found northern Peru much much cheaper than southern Peru, which is a touch expensive
Reply to this thanks for the help everyone, any more suggestions keep em coming as im sure it will help me further and no doubt any other south american travellers!
