After six months traveling all around China I found myself ordering one dish every single night: Chao qie zi. It just means fried eggplant and it changes from city to city but I never found a bad one anywhere. It's nothing like eggplant back home, it's simply the greatest food in the world.

For the truly adventurous, head to Shangrao, they cook it the best, along with the best non-veggie Chinese dish. Reply to this

Yu Xiang Qie Zi (You shee ong chee eh zeh) is another good eggplant dish, its in a thick sauce, a little sweet and a little spicy.

La zi qie zi - spicy eggplant!

If all else fails, just ask for qie zi, they will name off a few, just agree to one...its 99% of the time a safe bet.

Chao qie zi

Is that the one in the black sauce. It is so delicious. I had that one time in China. I didnt understand any Chinese so the food they brought in the restaurants was generally a surprise. I am a vegetarian and had that written in Chinese to show the restaurant people. They then brought me whatever vegetarian food they had. 😊 Reply to this

Hi, Mell,

I think much chinese food has got no english name, if some has english name, I think the waiter can't follow you, I am always on business trip in China, and I found many high-end entertainment venues or restaurants can not provide original chinese food, if you wanna taste chinese food, you must go to muture residential area, there are many small restaurants locate all around, they cook delicious food, but price is low, and many of them can not provide you invoice as the cost is so little. and I think you can go to Haidian District in Beijing, there are many first-class universtities, students are from every corner from China mainland and some from Hong Kong, many local flavor serve them, the better is, many students there can make basic communication in English, if you are luck, you may come across a very warm-hearted student who can also speak beautiful english, he/she can help you. Now I am in Dongguan located at the middle of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, I have just eaten delicious food in a large residential area, the flavor is Chaoshan (潮汕) , many are only named in chinese, so I advise you invited a city guide in differernt city, he/she can help you.
