does Brazilian government hate tourism?

i went by the brazilian consolate in buenos aires today and the security guard hands me a piece of paper that lists the requirements for a travel visa....(i could not believe what it takes for a canadian to simply travel there for a week)

first, it takes between 3 - 10 days to process (im betting it would be 10 instead of 3)

travel visa requirements:
-passport, roundtrip ticket, cost of visa (ok no problem)
-extra passport photo

heres the crazy shit:
-a bank statement CURRENT AND PREVIOUS MONTH
-presentation of credit cards and photocopy of them
-proof of work (work contract or letter from employer)
-earning statement (paycheck)

im my last couple of days in buenos aires, and will be in colonia for about 3 nights...
so it looks like the processing time alone prevents me from going, nevermind having ridiculous things such as work statement and pay stub, and a month old bank statement.

im supper dissapointed cause i was really looking forward to going to brazil

I may be wrong but I think Brazil imposes these conditions because of similar restrictions for Brazilians trying to go to Canada. Reply to this

Wow! Those requirements seem over the top. I think Barry might be right. Many countries retaliate against other countries who put visa restrictions on their citizens. They are not always being reasonable but they do it anyway.

How many travellers actually have a job anyway?? Maybe somebody can fake a letter and pay details for you? Do any of your family members run a company?

I seriously would be wary of handing over credit card details. You dont know whose hands those will get into. I think that requirement would make me choose another country. I was planning to go to Russia a while ago. They wanted me to hand over my credit card details to hotels in Russia before I could have the visa. There is no way I was doing that so I went to Poland instead.

I would choose other countries in S. America. I loved Ecuador and recommend it. Also I have been hearing some good reports about Guatamala these days. It was somewhat dangerous when I was there 10 years ago but things have apparently changed. One of my travel rules is 'go with the flow'. If one country is being over difficult there will be many others which will not be. And things change. The entry requirements of countries could be completely different in a few years so you can go to the ones you missed out on when they lighten up. Reply to this

yes its true (as i found out yestrerday) that stupid canadian government decided that brazilians required visa for traveling in canada so brazil did the same.
its too bad that regular people have to end up paying the price for an argument between some idiots-politicians.

so unfortunately brazil will not be part of my trip.
its too bad since i was really looking forward to it, but its virtually impossible at this point for me.
maybe its for the best anyways, since brazil is so huge that i would need two months just for it alone.
i guess next time i will do the eastern coast of the continent, and stick with the west for the remaining of this trip. Reply to this

Just imagine being a citizen of one of these (other) countries and staying on line for 4 months to get an interview , traveling to the Consulates branchs sometimes more than 2000 miles in order to aplly for a VISA to YOUR country(they don't accept internet or mail info exchanges anymore), not mentioning all the search they do in your (and family) whole life.....besides outrageous fees they charge and even if you were granted a visa, it does not guarantees that the Immigration oficers at YOUR country will accept you when you arrive there. Can you imagine????? So............ just feel priveleged for getting this far in your trip.........I wish you all the best !!!!

For a US citizen the requirement includes getting the visa from the consulate zoned for your place of residence -- it sounds like it would be impossible for me to get a visa from a different country as you are trying to do. The fee is about 150 $. Certainly retaliation for what the US requires of Brazilians

On the good side my visa is good for five years -- I got it for a trip here in 2004 and am now here again (Manaus at the moment). The visa got a good going over twice, first by the army where I actually crossed the border from Venezuela (Cuicui on the Rio Negro) and second by the Policia Federal in Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira, where I actually officially got the Entrada stamp. But this is an unusual border crossing and very few foriegners, other than Venezuelans and Columbians enter Brazil through this route.

travicius,

cant help but sense a bit of hostility in your post.
im finding it silly that you somehow got offended by anything i said.

firstoff, anyone that thinks the actions of a government represents in any way the actions of real people of that country is a fool..... i would never judge any person by the actions of the governemnt that rules the country they are from.... so if you think that because i dont like the rules that both canadian and brazilian governments have ut in place is some sort of an attack against the people or culture.... well that is simply .

second of all (and i am not defending the rules put in place but), you comparing getting a working visa to work or move into said coutry..... i am talking about simply visiting there for a couple of weeks.
dont compare apples to oranges

Besides....it is not just "retaliation". All sort of criminals want to go there to lure the innocent and now more than ever some go to steal biological resources Reply to this

True. Even in democratic countires we as individuals only have a small say in what our governments do.

Anyway, I am going to lock this thread now. Feel free to discuss this subject in another thread but please keep it within the forum rules. ie calm, informatative and/or chatty but not personal. Reply to this
