Wondering about transport from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu
15 years ago, July 18th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #42314
Hi,

I am trying to figure out the best way to travel from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. We are arriving in the Sacred Valley this Sunday 7/20 and are hoping to depart for Aguas Calientes on the evening 7/21 returning either the evening o 7/22 or morning of 7/23. I have checked perurail.com and it seems many of the Backpacker and Vistadome trains are sold out already. I have read in a few places about a Backpacker II train, for which you must buy your ticket in Ollantaytambo itself.

My question is has anyone tried this Backpacker II service? Is there usually availability on these trains at the last minute?

Thanks!

There are far more trains between AC and Ollantaytambo than between AC and Cusco, so you should have no problems booking on the day. In April, we booked a train from AC to Ollantaytambo on the day of travel.

However, it is high season at the moment, so it might be worth booking a few days in advance when you arrive in Cusco - any tour agency in Cusco could do this for you. Reply to this
